I Need to Admit Something

I've never listened to a Stones album. Of course I've heard a lot of songs on the radio, movies, and what not but I've never owned or listened to one through the entire way.

In my new place I'll finally have room to play with records again. Which album should I go buy?

Exile on Main Street. Second place for me would be Let it Bleed (their tenth record that was released in 1969). Bands were prolific back then!

Let it bleed is kind of fun because it feels like they improved the recording quality throughout the album. It adds to the "journey" of the album in my opinion. It starts with pretty rough borderline field recording quality, and ends with fairly well recorded grand songs. It's fun.
Exile is also a great choice. I haven't given that one as much time lately, but it's widely considered one of their best.

One more suggestion is to listen to the mono, not stereo, versions of the earlier albums from the 1960s as that was the way they were originally intended to be.

Hot Rocks and Forty Licks are good compilations you could start with. I like the early Stones up through Exile on Main Street. I agree with the earlier recommendations.

    These 3 are must haves.
    Beggars Banquet
    Let It Bleed
    Sticky Fingers

Also worth picking up, the not so well known Jamming With Edward.

I'm with this guy. A superb rekkid and very much of its time.
Sticky Fingers would be perfectly OK, too.

I'd further opine, at this late date ;) -- Let it Bleed is one of the finest rock songs, evah. Sounds great, too (at least, the copies I have, on various flavors of media, both digital & analog). You can almost feel the smack when listening to it. B)

Of course, you could always take the lazy person route and start with Hot Rocks.
    I did. ;)

Actually, I also like Through the Past, Darkly -- another pseudo 'greatest hits' album. I think that might have actually been the first Rolling Stones album I bought.

You see, I was a Beatles fan in my formative years; consequently, I was a Rolling Sones late adopter. Didn't really listen to 'em all that much until I was in college (the era of Some Girls -- which is also, I'd opine a pretty good rekkid).

(It's fine to use a better rekkid playa than this little Technics, BTW)

Oh, I mentioned the title track... and then there's You Can't Always Get What You Want.
Heck of a song. Listen to the choir soar on the outro; it's pretty awe-inspiring, actually. Plus how many great rock and roll songs feature a French horn? Our daughter, an erstwhile French horn player, even thought that was cool. :)

@nightfall -- what else have you missed? We can probably contribute even further to your delinquency, you know?

We're here for you, buddy! :)

speaking of which, and (sort of) still even on topic with this thread.
Having mentioned the Ur-version of You Can't Always Get What you Want above... and in the interest of equal time... I feel compelled now to mention the late Luther Allison's smoking R&B take on the same tune from the tribute album Paint it Blue.

I judge loudspeaker demos based on how hard, and how much of, my body is rockin' along when I play this track -- loud. Or loudly. Your grammar may vary.

Here's a YT-grade hit just to get you hooked; find a proper-fidelity copy and, umm, Let it Bleed...

I'm sure there's something else that somebody here would consider essential listening that I haven't heard in album form. I have probably heard it on the radio or Pandora at least though.

Moonlight Mile - The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

One the greatest Stones and rock & roll ballads ever, but you really have to hear it.
When the wind blows and the rain feels cold
With a head full of snow
With a head full of snow
In the window there's a face you know
    Don't the nights pass slow
    Don't the nights pass slow
The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
    Gonna warm my bones
    Gonna warm my bones
I got silence on my radio
    Let the air waves flow
    Let the air waves flow
Oh I'm sleeping under strange strange skies
Just another mad mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
I'm just about a moonlight mile down the road
I'm hiding sister and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm hiding baby and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm riding down you moonlight mile
Let it go now, come on up babe
    Yeah, let it go now
    Yeah, flow now baby
    Yeah move on now yeah
    Yeah, I'm coming home
'Cause, I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Down the road, down the road

Actually, I lied. I have 3 LP's of Sticky Fingers. One of them has the actual zipper on the LP cover. If I ever did listen to them, it was way back when I was a kid. Not really a big fan of them, TBT.

This Hot Rocks is the only one I own and only because of the Sympathy for the devil song....
$6 SACD hard to pass up.
So I also have never listened to any Stones albums before this one. I've heard many songs on the radio and was never interested in their catalog enough to buy any albums.
