I've never listened to a Stones album. Of course I've heard a lot of songs on the radio, movies, and what not but I've never owned or listened to one through the entire way.
In my new place I'll finally have room to play with records again. Which album should I go buy?

Exile on Main Street. Second place for me would be Let it Bleed (their tenth record that was released in 1969). Bands were prolific back then!

Let it bleed is kind of fun because it feels like they improved the recording quality throughout the album. It adds to the "journey" of the album in my opinion. It starts with pretty rough borderline field recording quality, and ends with fairly well recorded grand songs. It's fun.
Exile is also a great choice. I haven't given that one as much time lately, but it's widely considered one of their best.Analog: MoFi MasterTracker > MoFi UltraDeck > Sutherland 20/20

One more suggestion is to listen to the mono, not stereo, versions of the earlier albums from the 1960s as that was the way they were originally intended to be.

Hot Rocks and Forty Licks are good compilations you could start with. I like the early Stones up through Exile on Main Street. I agree with the earlier recommendations.

-- Let it Bleed is one of the finest rock songs, evah. Sounds great, too (at least, the copies I have, on various flavors of media, both digital & analog). You can almost feel the smack when listening to it.
Of course, you could always take the lazy person route and start with Hot Rocks.

Actually, I also like Through the Past, Darkly -- another pseudo 'greatest hits' album. I think that might have actually been the first Rolling Stones album I bought.
You see, I was a Beatles fan in my formative years; consequently, I was a Rolling Sones late adopter. Didn't really listen to 'em all that much until I was in college (the era of Some Girls -- which is also, I'd opine a pretty good rekkid).Let it Bleed it is.

Heck of a song. Listen to the choir soar on the outro; it's pretty awe-inspiring, actually. Plus how many great rock and roll songs feature a French horn? Our daughter, an erstwhile French horn player, even thought that was cool.

Actually, I lied. I have 3 LP's of Sticky Fingers. One of them has the actual zipper on the LP cover. If I ever did listen to them, it was way back when I was a kid. Not really a big fan of them, TBT.

$6 SACD hard to pass up.
So I also have never listened to any Stones albums before this one. I've heard many songs on the radio and was never interested in their catalog enough to buy any albums. -
