Hifi cable quote of the century! :)

Options
We're 1/5 of the way through, so I think that's a fair thread title. :|

I was readin' the most recent Stereophile (Feb. 2020) last night. There's a new-ish column, I guess, by Herb Reichert called Gramophone Dreams -- but apparently he's focusing on hifi
wires
for at least a while.

At any rate, while I (who as all y'all know am a bit of an agnostic vis-a-vis some of the more esoteric and extravagant wires on the market for hifi nowadays) thoroughly enjoyed the article (and would suggest readin' it unless you have a really deep intrinsic bias re: Stereophile, Reichert, or wires) -- I was really taken with one aside contained therein.

So taken, I'm a-gonna share it with all y'all.
Last year, when I visited Nelson Pass of Pass Labs at his home in Sea Ranch, CA, I was surprised to discover that he connected all the gear in his laboratory listening room with Radio Shack cables. When I asked him why, he told me, "Because I don't want anybody else taking credit for my accomplishments."

I knew I liked that guy.

:)

I guess he also could've gone with DIY wire/cables or Monster since they're basically dead.

A real guy with a real sense of his own accomplishments and reputation :)
In all seriousness, I have a lot of admiration for him.
Like many of the historical big names in this hobby, he earned his right to be a big name as far as I am concerned.

What he is doing is making the electronics work at their best to spec. Of course, upgrading the cables connecting the gear will allow the gear to sound even better by not degrading the signal from ‘A’ to ‘B’. When I, and others, upgraded the interconnect cable between the power supply and the tuner on the XP-20 it made a major improvement. Pass heard all the comments on that so when they replaced the XP-20 with the XP-22 they upgraded the interconnect cable to a decent Mil-Spec cable. Sounds so good I haven’t looked to see if there is an available upgrade. Obviously, adding a decent power cord will improve the gear even more.
