I’m at half power

Options
Never experienced this before. A storm blew in and our power went off, but not completely off. Our lights are dim with a few surges and our fans are barely turning. Hope I didn’t lose any A/V equipment or appliances, but even if I did I’ll consider myself lucky that I didn’t face the tornadoes that many in the Dallas area faced tonight.

Other than in aircraft, I've never seen a 1/2 outage. Its usually all or nothing.

I have seen where a spike will take out a capacitor and the ceiling fans will run real weak.

Do you have a power conditioner that reads out the incoming amps?

I did until about an hour ago😩.

When I came upstairs to check on everything the conditioner had a small, single red light instead of the normal blue lights with incoming amps. I just unplugged everything at that point.

I’m not positive it’s dead, but if so I hope it gave it’s life to save my connected equipment.

I got back home from a tough weekend out of town, and decided to check on my girlfriend's house before I went home for the night. The sirens started going off right as I got to her house, so I went in and turned on the TV. To my horror, the forecast showed the tornado directly over my neighborhood.

Some how the house seemed generally fine from what I could see tonight. Two major storms in 6 months, and I've been very blessed through both. I'll see the full effects tomorrow.

Glad you are okay. Looks like it was a rough night in Dallas. That is such a densely populated area for a tornado to hit.

    Hope everything is alright.

I’ve seen this a few times. In Texas, they call the ac guy before electricians if the lights are on. Anyway, the main breaker, the big one at the top of the panel, can sometimes be reset.

Worth a try. You should still get an electrician check it out, just to be safe.

Hope you’re weathering the storm Paul! We’re getting some serious wind and rain down here in Waco, but it doesn’t appear to be a tornado and the power is still fully on 🤞

Modern electronics are exceptionally susceptible to such power shenanigans, unfortunately. :(

Good luck to the OP! Hope your "plug in" 'putes (if any), routers, modem, and 'home entertainment' components all live(d) to see the dawn!

If it's just your house that is having this issue, you need to call the power company. You probably only have one of two poles connected on your power feed either at the transformer or on your service mast.

This happened to me and caused problems I've never seen before. Freaked me the **** out.

I had an electrician friend come out and he went through everything with me. We ended up calling the power company and they sent a truck out, dude checked the transformer at the street and it was good but showing no continuity on one of the legs from the pole to the house.

It ended up being a **** connector that the previous owner, Captain Halfass, used because he never got a permit for his service line upgrade. Or at least never called to have it inspected.

We had the same issues, though. Half the lights worked, circuits would drop out and come back on at random and everything with a protection circuit had the circuit indicator lit.

Power company shut down the power and then shut down my entire breaker panel. They replaced the bad connectors and then turned power on and went through the entire breaker panel flipping breakers one at a time.

Now if it's the whole block of people having the same issue, you have a transformer down or a leg on the transformer isn't connected. Gotta call the power company on that.

I had one of those brown outs a few years ago during a wind storm. Just flipped the main circuit breaker to the house to shut everything down all at once. No damage anywhere in the house but an AC regenerator like one from PS Audio does not like having to work that hard. That shut down pretty quick by itself but did flash an overheating warning. It was also weird hearing the motor in the furnace trying to run on half power.

Saw the news and it looks like my old high school in Dallas near Walnut Hill and Marsh Lane got hit pretty hard. Thank God there wasn't anyone killed in Dallas that I've heard of.

We were in west Ft. Worth last night watching the game and visiting our daughter, her husband and our new grand daughter who was born last Thursday. We saw some small hail there and high winds and were concerned how our area might look when we got back home to Highland Village, but no damage there.

I had that once in our house, years ago. Turned out to be the meter at the house. Evidently the two main lines which came to the house got pushed down enough over the years (in the yard) where one of them grounded (went through the insulation) on the inside. Weirdest thing I ever saw. The power company guy said it happens. He put an extension on it and no problems since...

Stop by Autozone, Napa, or Advance Auto and pick up a cheap multimeter for $9.99.

Good enough for telling you what actual voltage you have coming out of your outlets.

Brownouts can cook your gear quicker than over voltage.

Yes......But also anything with a motor (refrigerators, freezers, well pump, AC or heater). Electric motors can overheat badly and burn out with low voltage.

A few months ago I looked across the street and there was a downed power line to my neighbors house. He still had the lights on but they were very dim. I knocked on his door and told him about quickly unplugging his refrigerator and AC. Everything except light bulbs. He looked at me funny and said something like its OK I called the power company. I just walked away shaking my head. Later I heard he lost his refrigerator and some other electronics and had to make a homeowners claim. Still shaking my head.
