    FIIO X3 + Dock
    JBL LSR 305

Use this set up at work, I have previously had it set up in the back yard on the deck. Really sounds better near field, but works in other configurations. I also keep a good set of headphones. Versatile set up that sounds great. People are always surprised how good/loud this simple set up plays. My work is not exactly a quiet/stationary place so quiet fidelity is sacrificed for versatility and durability.

Gotta cheap Sharp TV and soundbar, cheap Sony DVD/USB player and Direct TV HD reciever on the screened porch. The wife and I spend countless hours enjoying music and TV on this little system.

They sound really good nearfield. Now that the mkII is out you can find a good used set for right around 100 bucks. At that price point they are hard to beat. They are large for a desktop set up, and you will need a preamp. I use that Fiio dock with either the X3 or one of their DACs.

My vote is for a pair
c-note DIY speakers 100 -150 depending on how you finish them
    Topping MX3 125

This is a wonderful way to get into audio. The topping receiver is a good cheap all in 1 option. And the c-notes sound way better then 100 dollars, and you get the satisfaction of having built them.

I used to have a few "cheapo" or vintage rigs scattered about. They're almost all gone now as I prefer listening to my main rig when I have the time. My only rig that does remain now is my 80's vintage Mac-Khorn rig which gets turned on only a few times a year just to make sure it still functions properly.

    Before crossover refresh*

    SDA2B - $125
Denon PRA1200 - free (given to me by my uncle)
    Chromecast Audio - $15
    Adcom GFA545 - $120

Pretty cheap in my book. Outside of that I also loved my Advent 25th anniversary speakers that cost me some foam and time paired with my Marantz PM225 that I got for $12 at goodwill.

I was a big fan of DAK industries (remember them?) - they marketed "hifi" components atreally good prices. Love the catalogs! I built almost an entire system from DAK components.

Pioneer SX-V500 receiver (used as a pre)
    SAE A205 Amp (DAK)
    BSR Colossus Speakers (DAK)
    BSR Equalizer (DAK)
    Teac Cassette Deck (DAK)
    Technics Linear TT

Ahhh, thinking about that system puts a smile on my face!
