Today, June 24th 2019, marks 2 years of me not drinking any alcohol. It feels good to no longer be a slave to a substance.

I'm proud to have made it this far, but I also realize that my lifelong goal of abstaining from alcohol has only just begun.

Alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc. are but symptoms of the addiction disease. Staying dry is one thing, working on the disease is entirely something else. Make that the lifelong goal.

I was about to post my "congratulations" Russ emoji, but remembered that Russ was holding a beer. That would have been in poor taste and not intentional. So I give you this...

Alcohol addiction runs rampant in my family, and one of the reasons I avoid it for the most part. I drink only socially and have never more than two beers when I do drink, which is perhaps 6 times a year or so. I have only been drunk once in my life, and that was on Memorial Day weekend in 1986. After I surrendered my keys to someone else to drive me back to NAS Millington, I vowed never to get drunk again.

Congratulations on one year sober, and may you continue to enjoy the benefits of many, many more.

I've only been drunk once too, I am going into my 46th year now.

Keep staying the course and congrats! At 55 I'm glad I never cared for the taste of alcohol. My addiction is car care products. I'm finding myself spending a few hundred bucks a year for the latest and greatest.

Thank you to those who responded with words of support and well wishes, I sincerely appreciate it. Furthermore, a thanks to those who simply read my post and potentially reflected on it.

I've been doing some of my own reflecting over the past week. I don't have anything super profound or meaningful to say, just that it simply feels nice not to have alcohol in my life anymore.

Thanks again for all the positive energy and support.

Drew, It's unfortunate that most people have "addictive personalities" and grow to "need" vices such as alcohol. I don't have this affliction so it's hard for me to understand what the big deal is. Some people joke they hate me for this. My best friend is one of those people that can't stop at one. It's all or nothing with him and this saddens me terribly. I'm probably an awful influence on him because I can have a drink or two then stop or go days and weeks without drinking and don't notice that I've done this. Addiction is a SERIOUS problem and I wish you all the best. Be strong brother!
