Congrats man good job on one year. I home you're taking the money you spent on booze and save it.

When I quit smoking I saved my cig money for 6 months and went on a 5 day fishing trip.

I quit the funny stuff in 92, I cut 98% of my drinking in 94. Life is so much better when I can remember what I did the night before. I did have to much the other week at my dads funeral, guess 4 glasses of wine is now too much for me.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Thank you so much for all the congratulatory replies, as well as the positive encouragement and support. I sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks also to those that shared their own stories with quitting drinking!

I debated making this post, but I felt proud about hitting the one year milestone and wanted to share my story. It wasn't easy to type that out, and it definitely brought up some strong emotions. I guess it's difficult to come to terms with exactly what transpired, and how low I was. Thanks to all who took the time to read it, even those who didn't make a reply.

At the 11 month mark I was able to fully get on the "other side" of it, from a mental standpoint. Alcohol no longer has any influence over me, and I'm now able to go for weeks/months without thinking about drinking. It feels good to be free of it's grip.

Anyway, one year down, forever to go!

I stopped drinking 26 years ago when my son started walking and wanted to carry around a beer bottle to be like me. I grew up with two alcoholic parents and wasn't going to be one too. Now he drinks and smokes weed every day any way. My wife and I have never touched weed in our lives so he had to have got that from peer pressure.

Good for you man, congrats. Keep up the good work, addiction is a **** no matter what the substance.

I've seen way too many lives be ruined/taken by alcohol addiction. Close family members, friends....if it isn't one substance it's another.

My own personal experiences go back to my late teens. One too many times bent over a guard rail puking my brains out. Thought to myself why am I doing this ? Do you enjoy feeling this way ?

Ever since, I never get drunk. When I feel myself getting tipsy, I stop. Gave up the hard stuff and just stuck to beer and wine. Life is soo much better when your not puking on someone elses shoes, or spending the next day with a major hangover.

Like Steve said, self control brother....learn it, use it everyday, in every aspect of your life. Best wishes for continued success with this.

Good on you for making the commitment, glad you posted your story too.
It was 15 years ago last week that I stopped smoking, I have no idea if it's a comparable addiction but remember how proud I was that I quit. I hope that feeling stays with you as well, my friend.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Please don't be hard on yourself or your son. Only thing you can do is love your children and be glad there is no burger sugar in the mix.

Me, I still remember my first hit. I was at a friends and his bro left the stuff out, I grabbed it and lit up. No peer pressure at all, it was just there.

Now boose, I was in the 5th grade. a friend and I raided my dads bar... my older brother got beat for it. I was drinking/smoking daily by the time I was 18.

Odd thing was I never felt like I had to light up or drink. I just did it because it was there. Now I don't smoke anything and drink very seldom.

Bad drinking story I'm now living out. My wife has never been a drinker. Right after getting married she might have one Crown and Coke if we went out to eat or something but it never was a priority to her until about a year ago. She developed a taste for vodka. She started drinking a little every night before bed. Then staying up half the night drinking and watching movies. She is now laying in a hospital all messed up. Liver dead and kidnies not doing enough. Yesterday they wanted me to sign off hospice papers saying the experts they've brought in are giving her a week or two before her other organs call it quits. Her brain has already started going and she can barely put two words together and usually looks at me like she doesn't know me. Earlier this week she said I was a guy she used to date. Yesterday was also our 33 year anniversary. What a terrible day to mark that milestone for me! I'm lost?!? I didn't sign the hospice paperwork until I talked to her family and stuff. Today she said she doesn't remember anything about being told she was this sick and isn't ready to die. She layed there crying today asking me to please not let them kill her. VERY gut wrenching.

All over me not trying to stop her from drinking a little vodka so she could go to sleep.

My mom died last year from alcohol. But she was a life long alcoholic and it was surprising she lasted so long. My wife drank 3-4 months at most and it took her out this fast. Unbelievable and completely unfair.

Congrats Clipdat!!! Great accomplishment! Keep it up. It's so worth it. I drink very, very little anymore. But I've never had a problem with it. Others, very close in my family have, so I know it's best to never go back once you quit. From looking at my post's tonight you'd think I was drinking, but nothing for me but water. Keep in control!!!

Three thumbs up for you, Clip!

Alcohol can be a lot of fun. It can also cause problems both large and small. And it can be a killer. Those aren’t mutually exclusive of one another. That’s one thing that makes its pervasive role in our lives and I’m society such a conundrum.

I am damned proud of you or anyone else who can take a fearless inventory of their life and then act on removing anything - alcohol, weed, sugar, a belief system, a lover or friend - that has become an agent of destruction.

Keep on keeping on. You and your wife, both. How very fortunate you are to have one another.

And very best wishes for your future -

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'

I'm terribly sorry to hear the news about your wife. If there's anything I can do or if you just want someone to talk to, please feel free to PM me. I know that ultimately nothing I can say will reduce the impact of what's occurred, but just want to let you know that we're here for you in this difficult time.
