AR 38B Find

Hi,

Just pick up these at the local GW for $4.99 each. The drivers need to be refoam but for the price why not. They are heavy for their size. Will add them to the queue after the 1C are done. I need to get back to work.

Need to look for 4" surrounds for the mids and 8" for the woofers.

Love getting classic older speakers for cheap! B)

I should frequent my local thrifts and pawns again...even though I have no space for any new finds. :s:'(

I just had a quasi re-foaming party here 2 weeks ago on a friends AR410's. 3 of us had a blast on that first day. Then it was just me and the speaker's owner.

It looks like the ferro fluid has leaked out of your tweeters.

Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

The rotted foam looks just like what I had on a pair of give-away AR93Q I got from folks I know.

The tweeters had also separated, no more ferrofluid.

I glued new foams in place, and glued the diaphragm of the tweeter back on (no added ferrofluid) and they work fine for use in a secondary system.

I did eventually re-install the "sock" grillecloths, and also did a cheapie revamp of the crossovers.

Yep, the one with the side-firing woofers.

My only acoustic-suspension speakers. Everything else I've ever owned was ported in some way

Surprisingly nice considering the tweeters have known issues (no ferrofluid), the bigass midrange and both bass units have aftermarket foam, and all I did with the crossovers was install fresh electrolytics (not film caps).

Oh, yeah...I ran the grille socks through the washing machine. Got rid of a heap of tar and nicotine.

I have about seventy-five dollars in 'em, plus hours of labor.

I'd love to hear them. B)

Wouldn't elevating them or tilting them back a bit improve the highs? :p

The "new" house has a wider fireplace. These are now parked on top of the fireplace base (I'm sure there's a proper name for it...but I don't know it) so the tweeters are at ear-level when seated. If they were on the floor, they'd be tilted and on spikes.

The situation is not perfect, but they sound pretty fair. Nicely toed-in for what I thought would be the typical listening position for SWMBO and I. As it turns out, we tend to sit to the side.
