    Thanks for posting this up.
I always turn my Nad off from the rear power switch after use thinking that was best for longevity or “wear” for the amp.

I don't remember if he mentioned temperature but I bet the thermal stress of turning stuff off an on all of the time is not good for longevity

Interesting, and I'm sure a debate to follow. My takeaway:
    • Standby mode if your component has it.
    • SS components leave on.
    • Tubed components turn off.
    I'm a believer!

My take is if the only power switch is on the back of the gear it's meant to stay on all the time. I have a phono preamp that has no power switch at all. If there is a standby switch on the front, I use it and don't leave the gear fully powered up all the time. But, it is better to fully power up a system for half an hour before listening to music. Home theater system gear doesn't matter as much.

If I am not going to listen to a system for a week or more I just unplug it from the AC outlet.

My NAD amp has a power switch on the rear with a standby switch on front.
I can go weeks or more between using the amp and then I would turn it on from the rear power switch and then get right to it.
From what I have been reading about this topic, I guess I should first power it on and leave it powered up for approx. a half hour or so before using the system.
I’ll have to get in the habit of doing that going forward.
    Thanks for the tip.

Use the standby function, it draws micro amps, but keeps things stable.

My Pass XP-20 preamp didn’t have a power switch, but the newer XP-22 does have one in the rear. Someone said it was to satisfy some electrical code regulation. I never turn it off.

It takes 48 hours or so for my Pass Labs gear to settle in after being unplugged for any length of time. I leave it and the PS Audio on all the time, HT gear and the tubes get turned off.

I have also noticed that it takes 48 hours for my Pass Labs gear to "sound right" from a cold start. I leave my two channel gear on 24/7. With my HT gear, only the OLED TV is turned off.

I tend to just turn my house power off when I'm not home, that way I never "technically" turn my equipment off.

I've also noticed my Mac amps do sound better after an hour or so of being turned on. But as far as warming them up I have not been able to get them above room temperature no matter how hard they're pushed.

I tried leaving my stuff on all week once, but the AC couldn't keep up and my room was about a zillion degrees. Just kept telling myself it's worth it, it's worth it... Then I cracked.
Did sound better for that week, but my room being that hot is just miserable.

The only time I've ever left equipment on is to burn it in quicker. I think a solid 5 days a couple of times. Other than that it's off, never had an issue...

We have had equipment "Fried" from random hot weather power surges, even when on power surge protection!

Lesson learned, nothing stays on, and if we we are gone more than a few hours, the master plug gets pulled for any important electonics.

    Ironically 2 clock radios survived.

    Now waitaminute :)
What kind of hardware are you talking about?
You're not running Class A hardware or a slew of vacuum tube equipment (yet), are you?

I mean, I do realize that modern AV stuff generates tonnes of heat (don't get me started...), but two-channel stuff, at idle, should be pretty quiescent.

You also might want to try a Kill-a-Watt on the various components and see how much power they're sucking down at idle.

Oh, and is that a zillion degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius?

    ;)

I'm running my NAD C352, which does not get Class A or tube hot, but still runs fairly warm at idle. The first two days all was good, but by the third day, it was no longer enjoyable to be in my room for any amount of time.
I think the real problem wasn't that the AC couldn't keep up, rather it was fine out in the hall where the thermostat is. but in my room, it didn't know it was warmer, so it never turned on.

I like to power mine off and then when I turn it on along with the sub, the kitchen lights dim for a minute. It's really cool.
