Good to hear - I've been eyeing that TV for a while, planning to get it from Best Buy.

So we hubg this beast on the wall tonite. The old 64" plasma which was flat to the wall seems small as this set is a foot away from the wall. The picture quality is bright, sharp and overall a HUGE upgrade.

Very bright and accurate. but not fake with no soap opera effects. Going to get the full HT configured to work with it and the Oppo 203 and the PS4. Absolutely no off axis issues in my seating areas and can watch from the patio as well.

Had Directv come in this morning to swap out the HD Genie client for a 4K Genie client . I have 4K on some sets, but this one blows them all away. Directv broadcasts a handful of 4K channels that include some sports (NBA, CBB, a couple of nature content channels and a 4K PPV channel). Not a lot of content yet but it is very stunning to see the difference between 4K and HD...

Why does directv have to swap out the genie. I called for a new genie which is no charge but a 49.00 install charge. Can't the new genie be plug and play? Thanks for the info. Directv rep was no help at all when I asked.

If your old genie was wireless they may have to come out and wire the 4K genie which needs a coax connection to the SWM. Depending where you are withing your contract they allow you to make upgrades at a pre negotiated price. If you are going to the 4K genie client then there may be an EQ charge. I have a contract that covers all equipment and installation with no charges.

So I think you understand this, But the Genie II is the DVR and server to the clients.... The newer Genies have a base unit which contains the DVr and can support multiple "clients" which are mini boxes that connect to the GenieII/DVR/Server... The SD/HD clients can connect wirelessly but 4K clients need to connected physically to the Genie II via coax.

New GenieII not to be confused with Barbara Eden B)

They are coming out tomorrow to swap out the genie and 2 mini's too. There is no way around self install. They mentioned being a customer since 1994. Thanks for the info.

There goes all of your DVR content. Someday this dish and receiver are all going to go away and will be on the interwebs with storage in the cloud... Even Directv is going to do that too. You can already get Directv NOW which is their streaming service.

Yup it's literally here but it is expensive and there currently are no providers or sources. You can buy yours on the Samsung site now.

    https://www.samsung.com/us/televisions-home-theater/tvs/qled-8k-tvs/85--class-q900r-qled-smart-8k-uhd-tv--2018--qn85q900rafxza/

And just like HD and 4L the inital products will prolly be throw aways once the providers and source manufacturers get on board.

You may be able to keep your old DVR inline.... ask the tech. Or maybe remove the HD and add it as a second drive to your new dvr.... I haven't checked either solution but there are a lot of talented techs out there especiall since most of the are indy contractors for DTV.

solution might be to put it on a outside hard drive yourself. You do have that ability with Dish but it must be a powered hard drive not passive.

DidMikey081057 did you have to update the dish or LNB for the 4k update? Thanks

So I think they updated the LNB when I originally upgraded to 4k some 3? years ago. But it does require the correct LNB... I think it just needs to be an oval dish tho.

Have them show you that the eq is grounded properly too. A lot of lazy installers sheet metal screw the dish ground to the metal soffit material.

Going to weigh in here a bit. I own an OLED and have demoed a handful of QLED and high end LEDs. While the QLED can hit the black levels of an OLED in some scenes. It just doesn’t compare overall. You have occasional residual light spill from the dimming zones. OLED is self emissive so when you see black the pixel turns off. This gives you a gorgeous contrast ratio in the dark. OLED is going to give you the closest experience to a plasma at 1/3 of the weight and low power consumption. With regards to OLED not being good with motion I disagree. Cut the cord and use YouTubeTV or HuluTV and those stream at 60fps. Compared to my Panasonic plasma I am very happy with the LG C8. It is a ton brighter. I have to have my brightness maxed out on the plasma to reach 50% on the OLED. Dolby Vision and HDR10 UHD look fantastic. You can also pick up OLEDs at a fraction of the cost of QLED now at places like greentoe.

My only complaint with the OLED is that you do play a bit of a panel lottery. My first one had a lot of posterizarion in the shadows, banding at 5% grey and developed a vertical bar after 1000 hours. After they replaced it my second one is perfect. Great tonality in the shadows and perfect ISF picture modes. I didn’t even bother running a calibration yet it looks so good. It really is a treat watching anything on this set, especially movies with a lot of dark scenes. Every seat in the house is great. LED’s are just going to look washed out and blacks turn grey off axis.

Have seen several LED (LCD) sets in the last few years, at friends houses, and possbily due to adjustments and such, none seemed to better our one fairly low priced Panny plasma......

None have looked bad, but some were fairly high end, and just were not any improvement as far as reality of colors, black levels and overall "realness" of an image.

Brighter, yes, but somehow just not right.

We are looking for a newer Bigger TV, and own a panasonic plasma, but other than OLED, nothing looks quite as good.

Was your OLED similar color wise, and so on?
I hate buying a new OLED, then finding out a year later, they improved more or cost half as much, and mine is worthless..lol

We never have our brightness at more than 50%, and much more and it is too bright for us. But we have a room without much direct light at all, and fairly dim.

Started to see a couple of sales for the C8/E8 LG platforms... got me to thinking... LG must be getting ready to launch their C9/E9 upgraded series in the next couple of months. I think I'm going to have to hold off yet further... till maybe holiday sales time to see if I can get a descent price on the newest iteration.
