Not much here on CP, but anyone using a switch to select multiple inputs to a amplifier? In my case, I've got the Bottlehead SEX integrated, which only has a single input. Any advice or experience is always appreciated!

For reference, I found this. 4 inputs, single output. Looks solid, with no sophisticated circuitry to muddle things up.

Idk what i'm talking about. Looks cool and the simple circuitry I would figure is the most you could ask for in your situation.

How often do you change sources? I listen to CD's 95+% of the time and have no problem unplugging an RCA cable.

About 50/50 between the CD and the streamer. And maybe the cassette deck in the future!

Then you should probably get a switch. It would take a long time but I wouldn't want to wear out the RCA connector.

But a cassette player? You should edit your previous post so you don't incriminate yourself. Hooking up a cassette player to a Bottlehead Sex is illegal in most states and will instantly void your warranty. :D

I use one in a secondary bedroom system in place of a powered pre. Seems pretty transparent to me. In your use case, with the volume control turned fully up & essentially out of the loop, I can't see it negatively impacting things.

My "passive preamp" (transformer volume control) also has a three position source selector in front of it -- but I also use a keen little "Azden" branded switch unit which also provides some dubbing facilities (for those of us old enough to remember dubbing -- sort of the analog ancestor of ripping ;) ). I had the opportunity to buy two of these units at a charity fleamarket in our erstwhile home town some years back. I only bought one. Shoulda bought both. :|

That one has some active circuitry in it, too! :p
My guess (?!?!?) is that the switching part is completely passive -- but it may in fact be a little mixer (mixerette)?

A passive switchbox is easy to make and it only adds one extra RCA plug and a switch to the signal path. If you like to tinker there are numerous plans on the internet. And with quality components you can probably make something better.

Here are some basic examples using a double pole rotary dial. Note all of the RCA plugs are grounded to the box. This design is simple but I would prefer to also switch the RCA ground too. This can potentially reduce noise or ground loops. If you use a 3 pole switch where you switch ground you will need insulated RCA plugs so they are not all grounded on the box (or a plastic box).

    dreaminginbits.com/rca-switch-box/

Rotary switches work fine but if you only wanted to build a box for two inputs I would go even simpler and just use a triple pole double throw switch.

    sure does.

Might I, however, suggest -- with, of course, characteristic humility :| -- that, if you want to go the 'passive preamp' route, you give some consideration to a transformer or autoformer volume control as opposed to a resistive atenuator? :)

This switch looks heavy duty and from the style is probably old. There is a good chance it was made in the US. Unfortunately there is no description of who made it. But for $27 it looks better than the junk on amazon.

    Interesting Doc, as always.

The volume control on this unit was really not intended for primary use, as the Bottlehead's volume control will be. As such, the passive's attenuator would generally be "turned all the way up" while in use. Would that mitigate the negatives associated with the resistive type attenuators?

I agree with the sentiment that if you don't want to go the 'passive preamp' route, that you should just avoid having an attenuator in the gizmo, full stop. :)

Along those lines, there's - IMO - nothing wrong with the cheap passive switch boxes that used to be sold, e.g., by the defunct MCM Electronics. MCM still sort of lives on as part of Newark, but to actually find any of their legacy products on the "Newark Element14"* website is a Sisyphean task. :(

Maybe a Schiit SYS if you only need two inputs.

    schiit.com/products/sys

I am using one on my KEF ls50W to go between the Lumin D1 and Jolida d9 phono pre. If the volume is all the way up on the SYS, I cannot hear the difference between the Lumin strait to the kef, or going through the sys to the kef but, I do have decent cables on it.

Interesting pieces by Yamaha and Pioneer.
At the time I suppose when the number of popular input devices clearly exceeded the capability of controls amps at the time!

So I went with the Tisbury passive pre. Got a great deal on a used minty piece. Gotta admit, the aesthetics match nicely. Playing right now!

3 inputs, 2 outputs, and a volume attenuator.

It does, sadly, have an owwie on the front panel -- otherwise it'd already be on its way here! :)
