Since I contributed to derailing this thread, I'll try and bring it back on track with an audio story.

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away, I had a Technics R2R player. Sounded great, when it worked. Always breaking down for one reason or another. I finally had it with the thing.

So...I hog tied bottle rockets to the wheels, and turned it on. Outside of course....was kinda cool for about 10 seconds. Think I got more enjoyment out of it in that 10 seconds than I did for the 6 months I had it.

I hear you -- someone gave me a Technics Panasonic* branded reel to reel deck at one point. This model is said to be TEAC OEM (and I don't doubt it) although it's not identical to any TEAC I know of. Plus, it was awfully tall.

It kinda worked, but it needed more attention than I was prepared to lavish on it -- and so I passed it along to someone else... kind of the fruitcake of the hifi component world, you know? :|

    * Pretty sure these behemoths were also sold under the Technics label, but this particular one was branded Panasonic :p

@FMalitz . I personally enjoy your stories. I have only been learning about audio for 20 years. Enjoying it all my life . I have learned a lot and spent lots of money because of this crew here. Thank you Dab. I've been thinking about this all weekend and I decided not to participate going forward. It was suggested that I develop a thick skin. What have I done to deserve the slings and arrows requiring a thicker epidermis? It was also suggested that I might be devoid of a sense of humor. At this point in my life, I'm interested in low stress situations and enjoying myself above all. I'm not interested in your criticism (not you dab). As a working musician for 50 years, I have come to detest critics. As an example, the shallow uninformed writers of Rolling Stone magazine have the temerity and the gall to rank guitar players. How about ranking Renaissance artists? Classical composers? The best wines or pizzas? These are all art forms and are above ranking. By the same token, I've met many audio critics or reviewers, if you're more comfortable with that appellation. The majority are actually people who like to write, express themselves, and may not know which components sound more natural. I've encountered this so many times that my heroes degraded into normal, albeit flawed, human beings. In fact, they really have no business telling us which components we would enjoy owning.

Anything I write, apparently, is going to be subject to ridicule because it will be interpreted as self-aggrandizement. How do I explain the history of the dozens of manufacturers I've been involved with without involving myself in the story? It's an easy question to answer because I could assume a distant perspective and simply create the narrative but I try to add the human touch-- a youngster given opportunity beyond his age; watching a company I launched increase its sales and reputation; consulting for companies I never dreamt would have any interest in anything I might say. It's been a wonderful experience.

But the fact is, there are members who really don't care about the transition from mono to stereo; they don't care about the transition from tube to solid-state; they don't care about the very first bookshelf loudspeakers that actually could develop deep bass presaging a gigantic change in the industry; they don't care about the mighty electrovoice patrician with its 30 inch woofers. They don't care about the transition from public address loudspeakers to smaller systems specifically designed for natural sound and finally, don't really care about the history and evolution of this rewarding hobby. What they care about is criticizing others for their own validation and, just as bad, they find it amusing to do so. This negativity is no longer part of my life. My goal is to have fun every day. I paid my dues.

I have four businesses to run. I have a family. I ride sporting motorcycles at high speeds. I write for guitar magazines. I still play blues in formerly smoky nightclubs. I'm likely older than anyone reading this thread yet I have plenty to do. I should probably get back to work as I'm a terrible typist and even this simple missive took me a half hour to compose and edit (as you've noticed, my greatest crime is my inability to be concise. I'm trying to look up the word, "brevity". Sorry about that.

To those of you who've enjoyed my fledgling concept, please come and see me. I'm usually at every show with some of my Bob Carver product. The next show will be in Tampa followed by Axpona. I would thoroughly enjoy meeting you.

If you need help or if you have broken Sunfire subwoofers or any unusual components that need repair, especially if they been designed by Bob, feel free to email me at CarverSunfire@Gmail.com. The Bob Carver company derives no income from this service; we farm out the repairs to the best guy in the country and force them to give a discount.

Wishing you all the very best and may the coming year bring harmony and peace.

I agree and have been thoroughly enjoying your stories. I think you're just looking into that one response a little too deep. I get it though you are a busy person and have lots of other things to do. If you decide to stay and contribute that would be fantastic (I believe I am speaking on behalf of the members of the forum).

And part of having a sense of humor is being able to laugh at yourself, which is the direct opposite of being full of yourself. Based on the PM you sent me, I can see how this might present some challenges. :p:pB):p:p

You seem like a great guy Frank, and we would love to have you hang out here with us. Everything you cited above, we would love to learn about, and some here may know even more than you about some things. Just take things with a grain of salt and a smile. And try to lighten up. Don't vanish now, I just ordered my very first tube amp a few weeks ago.

Everyone here knows I'm a few fries short of a happy meal when it comes to audio and
will need all the advice and help I can get for this new journey.

    True audio story.

In 2012 I joined this place as I had acquired a set of Polk Audio SDS SRS, no clue what they are, what to do, where to start.

So I start asking questions about something I know nothing about.
My first advice I was given was only 4 words "get a real amp."

Sadly it took 6 years to get one but I believe I do FINALLY have a real amp coming, a Carver 275, so stick around, have some fun and help a brother out.....

Frank, as someone who does't know much about audio, I enjoyed your stories and hope you won't leave and I believe more than a few feel the same way.

One thing I have learned in my 67 years on this small planet is there is always going to be someone negative around. I use to get upset about that, but I have learned that if you let someone run you off then they win and I'm sure not going to give them the satisfaction of knowing I can be run off that easy. If you're old like me or even older just remember we are supposed to mellow out in our old age and not let the small stuff upset us like it did when we were young.

BTW is you know of a place on this planet where there are no negative people around that agree with me 100% of the time, please let me know. My first response would be I can't wait to move there, but when I give it more thought I would then think how boring that would be.

Frank, judging by your posts and the responses on a host of other audio forums it becomes obvious that your holier than thou attitude is the only problem.

I agree on the Omaha not being a good choice for human consumption

Tony sorry to go back to detailing again, but I almost bought the super auto coffee maker (the ones that go for $2-3k and do it all) but could not find good reviews on any of them. That’s why I chose this. Best boiler for the money

I will go back to the thread now. Grew up decently poor and used to find old stereo equipment at Good Will. I would buy many old units and combine and make work. Many different Frankenstein setups. I then went on a stint of being addicted to substances until my early twenties. Wasn’t into anything but that for sometime. I got sober and have been ever since (21 years now) I got back into stereos when the HTIB started in the late 90’s. Got hooked. Slowly processed until the crash happened. Lost it all again. For the last few years things have been good for my family and I. After making many other things priorities, I decided to put some more money back into my childhood love. I now still have a Frankenstein setup, albeit a little more coin ;)
