Wilmington is taking a brutal hit from the rain...high water rescues there since last night......sadly this will go on for a few weeks as the rivers actually begin to drain towards the coast..NC looks like a good state to avoid all together for many weeks...

Finally seeing blue on radar to arrive this am. Rain last night was relentless. I bet at least 5 inches fell. I'm sure there was bad flooding in low spots. I struggled to keep our carriage house drains clear.

Cape Fear is forecast to crest Tuesday at 22.8ft, an alltime record. And records go pretty far back.

Hi, Tony. All is well here at the homestead. No backstroking yet. Just day 4 of gusty winds and ungodly amounts of rain. Lots of trees snapped around the neighborhood yesterday and early in the wee hours of the morning but for the most part, it looks like it's moving out in my area. It almost like getting stalked by a turtle...it just takes forever for it to get here.

Flooding is the major concern now for all of the area. Eastern NC and upper SC are hit HARD. Major highways are closed, an untold amount of secondary roads are closed and it will only get worse over the next couple of days. Like hurricane Matthew, lots of roads and bridges will be no more after all is said and done. Rescue operations are still ongoing.

    Stay safe Eric.

All of our water (which is now at flood stage) is headed down your way now too. Then, the mountain water is headed down to us, then also on to you. Stay high and dry my friend. For such a weak hurricane, it has become no laughing matter.

Just because the wind speeds dropped significantly before landfall does not mean much to me. It was still a Cat4 storm in terms of the moisture it had accumulated. I think they need a new way to classify these events that take rainfall/moisture content into account as well.

I also would not mind seeing a heavy storm like this here in CA once in a while. Then Jerry Brown could shut up about a drought.

The local Chief Meteorologist was just talking about this in the past couple of days. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is based upon open water out in the vast ocean. It has no direct correlation on the inland damage when it comes to flooding potential. This hurricane has re-written a lot of hurricane "rule books". Same thing with what hit Galveston TX. Wind scale is not *always* directly related to flooding potential.

Remarkable coverage by the dedicated visual journalists of the "failing" New York Times. This is what visual journalism is about. Shedding light where there is darkness, going in when most everyone else is going out, showing truth with a camera. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/13/us/hurricane-florence-photos.html?action=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage

    For those in NC....

This is a link to monitor flooding waterways. It changes on a moments notice in places.

    https://fiman.nc.gov/fiman/#

Pay attention, close attention to what is upstream and what might be headed your way. FWIW.
