Indeed. I don't think think a lot of folks consider the labor time/cost when complaining about the cost of better cables.

As quoted above I agree to a whole bunch of percentage points. The fit and finish of cables from even the midrange guys does not change from the lowest offerings to their highest.

Signal Cable is a prime example. No matter what you pick from their options the quality of workmanship is the same. Cheap wire and ends to expensive wire and ends takes the same effort to do well.

Like the craze some years back (probably pushing 20 years ago, now) for braiding CAT5 to make speaker cables.

Did that work? Was it worth the effort?

It works but it is a ton of work for mediocre at best cables. I have done it several different ways and never was satisfied with the results. Cheap good cables run circles around data wire with a ton less work.

    Oh, it wasn't me! :-)

I used a simpler CAT5 cables for some time -- it's better sounding than zip cord (recall that my reference point is single-ended, direct-heated triode amps with no global negative feedback, i.e., fairly high output impedance)... but almost any "good" speaker cable will outperform the stuff.

I'm currently using some Canare cabling I got from ALL212 right here on the Polk forums.
(I'm not big on high-zoot wires, myself -- if I had just loose stacks of money cluttering up the house, I'd feel differently, though)

In the interest of disclosure, though -- I do have some bits of CAT5 wiring still in the 'real' hifi upstairs... the innards of the Duplexes are wired with it, as are my supertweeters.

    I like those splitters. B)
We have those splitters in several configurations. They really do dress the end of the cable and make it look better than just heat shrink.
