Wow there are a lot of articles out on the interwebs about the topic, and everytime I see one I get a chuckles as they tend to be be very subjective from the writer's point of view.

I wish we could do a poll, but the site lacks that feature.

Trying to be as subjective as possible, who would think deserve to be in the top 5?

Here's Mine:

Led Zeppelin

The Beatles (not a big fan, but they deserve)

The Rolling Stones (same again)

Pink Floyd

Steely Dan (this one ought to raise a few eyebrows)

If anything, Steely Dan is hard to categorize as to what type of music they fall under, but in our house they are #1 me and the wife love the Dan and usually get a daily dose, usually Royal Scam.

    As far as Rock Bands

    Floyd
    Zeppelin,
Stones from the begining until Mick Taylors departure the rest (Meh)
The Kinks (most underated band but should be up there with the others)
Neil Young any form with the Horse or on his own

I consider that 5 as the Dan falls into a different category. which is the best band of different styles.

Gotta go with The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Moody Blues, Santana.
Solo is a tougher one. Gotta go with Billy Joel or Elton John.

A contemperary band, the Foo Fighters, are hugely popular and I must admit i enjoy them immensely and they might make my top 5. The moment that Jimmie Page came up to play with the Foo's in Wembley may be one of the greatest moments in music history, and Dave Grohl wept.

Live or studio? Fixed members (The Who) or fluid (Steely Dan)? What is "rock"? Way too many variables.

The Beatles, because they either pioneered or popularized so many different music paths during their reign. Solo artist... I would have to go with Tiny Tim.
The Gear... Carver "Statement" Mono-blocks, Mcintosh C2800 Arcam AVR20, Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR70x850B 4k, Polk Audio Legend L800 with height modules, L400 Center Channel Polk audio AB800 "in-wall" surrounds. Marantz MM7025 stereo amp. Simaudio Moon 680d DSD

I find this to be very difficult task.
On any given day it could change depending on my mood.
There would be one band that would always be in my top 5

    the-beatles-on-itunes.jpg

The other four ''today'' would be
    (not necessarily in this order)

    2. The Yardbirds
    3. The Doors
    4. Pink Floyd
    5. Cream
    6. The Zombies (had to add one more)

Like P-man says the list will change Queen could be on my 5 of lists along with Tool,or Porcupine Tree. I think the serious collector should have all of Queens output up to the Game. Hot Space WTF happend from there on boggles the mind.

Hard question for me what is rock what is pop?
Is the Beatles pop or rock?, both I'd say but not pure rock, soft rock?
Led Z is definitely rock and is my first pick
    How about Grand Funk Railroad?
The Rolling Stones is pure Rock, well most songs
    Areosmith is pure rock
