Not sure if this is old news - it's new to me. It looks like the Transporter is back in "Transporter SE" form. $1400 is a bit expensive, but still very interesting.

I haven't seen it on the Logitech site in recent months - so I assume they're reintroducing it.

Correct, though I bought a new Roku M2000 instead.

Way I figure, internet streams are all low-ish bitrate anyway, and the M2000 will play flac off ANY upnp source, not just the slimserver (which does not run on most NAS drives.

And 400$ is much cheaper than 1400.

Still, the transporter is damn sexy if you've got the money.

I know - I already have a Touch + DACMagic another SB Classic so I personally can't justify getting one. But it's cool to see it's back.

Story is the Logitech Transporter SE has a round filler in place of the large front panel selection knob; apparently no longer available. Lots of folks say they don't ever use the selection knob so not really a problem.

On 5-8 Feb Logitech had a coupon code logi-tse-2211 that reduced the SE to $999 which was a decent deal if one really wanted a Transporter, I would wait for another sale.

Personally I would say get a Squeezebox Touch which is far more current and supported, and may actually sound as good as the Transporter DAC.

Honestly, I think it's just the built in DAC, XLR outputs, and perhaps a better power supply (b/c you would be using the analog out).

I have a Squeezebox Classic that I had modded by Bolder Cable, and it's fantastic. I've read reviews of his mods that put them ahead of the Transporter. In my current balanced setup, I push the Squeezy through a dac so I have a balanced source. But in my prior setup, where I used the analog outs direct from the Squeezebox, I was amazed by how good it sounded. Built a power supply for it as well.

I'm going to bump this since the Transporter and Squeezebox in general has sparked my interest.

How does the SQ of Squeezebox compare to a wired connection? I currently run digital coax from my PC to my DAC via a USB 24/192 transport, and the SQ is great. It seems like the Squeezebox is a great device, but I wouldn't want to loose any SQ in the process...

I'd be willing to bet SQ will be as good or better with the Squeezebox. Unless you plan on playing 24/192, I would just stick with a Squeezebox Touch and go coax into your dac. The Touch will give you up to 24/96 without upsampling. Transporter is overkill IMO.

How's the DAC in either the Touch or the Transporter? Are they worth using without an external DAC?

As for the actual DAC chip I believe the transporter uses the AKM AK4396 "Miracle DAC" which is a very fine #cruncher.

Both. I started off with the analog mods, then I got a dac and sent it back to Bolder for the digital mods. Since that post I've replaced that SB3 with a Touch to play 2496. I had the Touch modded by Wayne as well.

You'll find it better than consumer grade cd players for sure. It's doesn't stack up to my Dac-2, but it holds it's own. A Touch just sold in the flea market yesterday for $230, still sealed. At prices like that, you can't beat the SQ. Especially when you consider it can play 24/96.

Wait a minute, I thought connecting the SB Touch to a DAC such as WS DAC-2 via coax will play 24/192 as is???

No, not true. I think 24/192 will play, but it will be down sampled. You need the Transporter to play 24/192 losslessly.

Or... use a laptop in conjunction with a USB to SPDIF converter (like the Musical Fidelity V-Link or Audio GD Digital Interface) and forget the Squeezebox.

You can get a decent laptop for the price of a SB.

    Upside: functionality

    Downside: palmability

Another huge thumb down is the laptop fan/heatsink noise. With the SB Touch - W4S DAC-2 - W4S ST-1000 combination, it's dead quiet in my listening area (well, until the music plays ). Therefore I refuse to bring a computer in.

I have no desire for a computer in the rig. None. Been there, done that. Squeezebox is the only way to go. I love the fact that with the Squeezebox, you plug it in, put batteries in the remote, and use it. No drivers, no software to configure, no complications. I'm all for using the computer as a media library/server, but I don't enjoy using it as a player at all. Squeezebox all the way...

+1. Though I wish the Touch looked like the SB3. I like the electronic VUs on the 3 and Transporter. Of course the Touch has the color one, but it seems a little cheezy ;)

Yes. If you're interested in a Bolder-modded unit, I could certainly sell my SB3. You'd be quite happy with it as long as you're not after 24-bit playback. SB3 down samples 24-bit to 16. My SB3 has been demoted to a whole-house system that's nowhere near the level of SQ that could take advantage of the Bolder mods. But I needed the Touch because I've started putting together a decent 24-bit collection. I'd be happy to put my SB3 in the hands of someone who'd get some use out of it.

In case anyone wasn't aware of this, it came out about 2 weeks ago and retails for $1499.

    http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/wireless-music-systems/devices/7934

It's $500 less than the original Transporter with the only difference being:

"The Transporter SE has the exact same technical specification as the Transporter, and therefore it delivers the same level of sound quality audiophiles strive for. The only difference between these two models lies in the access of the system's functions. On the Transporter SE, many of the functions that were previously accessed by the TransNav™ controller on the front of the unit are now accessed through the included remote control."

It was a very smart business move for Logitech to re-release this unit, and do it for $500 less than before. Lots of people were demanding they bring it back.
