New Pioneer Elite SC-35

Hey guys,

I just purchased the Pioneer Elite SC-35 on special at Best Buy. I got a very good deal, under $850 out the door, even with the 4 year BB Warranty. Just wondering if this reciever is worth having? Seemed to be a great deal...

    Thanks for the response. I am coming from a Yamaha 565. It sure sounds a lot different, thats for sure. I will have to let my ears adjust a little bit, but I definitely like how this beast looks!

    Hopefully more people chime in. I have 30 days to return it, and I just don't know much about this stuff. If the consensus is that this is a good purchase, then I can look to build around my a5's. :biggrin:

    well its a lot better than the Yammy thats for sure. Run the MCACC and it will help a lot as well. If your using for HT it's a big step up from the entry level AVR's and I'm sure you'll end up keeping it. I run a SC05 and wouldn't trade it for the world. I plan on getting an SC37 or whatever else come out in the mean time when I get a chance for a second HT system I run.

    Well that is encouraging for sure. I was looking to spend under $1000, and my previous options were the Onkyo 709, Pioneer Elite vsx 52, Marantz sr5006, and the Denon AVR 2312.

    Yes,you definately picked up a very good receiver and at a killer price. Its better than the other ones you mention in your last post. The MCACC and manual will get that thing sounding Awsome.

    I see in your sig you have the svs pb12. Which model is it, and how do you like it? I think my next HT purchase is going to be a sub and I hear great things about svs.

    You should have Best Buy price match the SC35 being sold at Costco for $749. The SC35 is a real nice receiver.

    My SVS Model is the PB12-NSD with the upgraded woofer that they now use. I like the Sub a lot, and excellent Bang for the Buck. Official rating is down to 18 Htz +/- 3 Db but It has a 17 Htz tune so can go even lower in an average room. Its Big and Heavy but it performs very well. I had the PSW 505 ( still do and reserved for a second room ) before I bought the SVS, and it can pick up a lot more on the bottem end, that the 505 would miss. It can shake you and your room when the output calls for it....so a nice upgrade for sure. It has a very clean sound though ( Low distortion ) so it takes a little bit of getting used too. Other subs that were distorting would seem to be putting out more of a signal at times.....and the SVS will only produce what is on the disc like most good subs. Once you get used to that,you should really like this sub.

    So far I love the sc35, except I notice that voices tend to be a little hard to hear. I wonder if my center channel is underpowered compared to my fronts? CS10 center rti a5 fronts. Or maybe I should just turn the center volume higher than MCACC recommends.

    Sometimes voices are fine, but lower discussions can be difficult.

    You need an RTI center. RTI's are a theater speaker and designed for detailed highs. Check out Polks Ebay store for a good price on a CSI A4 or CSI A6. Especially since the center channel carries most of the voicing in movies.

    I kinda figured that might be the problem, although it was never an issue on my old yamaha 565. Just curious if it is a problem with the receiver or not.

    Also, it could just be that I am in shock from the range this receiver has. Explosions and action scenes have never been so intense!

    I kinda thought the same thing about dialogue hard to hear, even with my Csi5. I played with the manual eq in the advanced MCACC settings and just gave it some time for it to break in and me to get used to the sound. After dialing it in, it sounds perfect.

    I also used to have the same problem with the Cs1 (same as the cs10) and after going to the Csi5 it was a night and day difference.

    I have herd that some older yamaha recievers were bright. That might have made up for the speaker. RTI are bright sounding wich is what a HT speaker is.

    I had Vr3MxStyler2k3 (Trey) moddify the crossovers in my RTI A7's and CSI A4. He replaced the electrolite capacitors with a better quality Clairty Caps. He also replaced the resitors with better Mills Resistors.

    Not that there is anything wrong with the factory xo's but you know how it is. You cant leave it alone. You always have to be tinkering and modding.

    Turn the volume up , don't un calibrate your system. You can but then you will be out of balance.

    So I recently bought one of these and have a quick question. I am currently only using this in a 2ch setup for the moment. Can I run MCACC for just the two speakers? I went into the menu and "told" it I only have two speakers hooked up.

    I usually use the AVR's setup then I pull out a SPL meter to fine tune it.

    I looked through the manual, and from the best I can tell you can set the x.over for all small speakers to whatever frequency you want, but not individual channels, correct?!

    One thing I like a lot about my onkyo 608 is that it allows you to set the frequency for each channel! My marantz sr7002 doesn't even do that...

    Why would you need different frequency setting for each channel? I find that to be a waste , buy matching speakers , run them all in small 80hz and for just about every single home theater room on the planet this works best. Even with big scary floor standing speakers , more dynamics when those monsters are in small as well. Let the bad **** kick your mouth in subs do al the heavy lifting and calibrate your system correctly. This is where it's at not using a bunch of mixed matched stuff.

    That's a good point mantis. I guess it was useful to set my cs2 to 100hz because dialog was clearer as opposed to 80hz that the m70s were set to. I suspect that was a function of a lack of power from my onkyo 608 and upping the frequency was a bandaid, so this shouldnt be a problem w the sc-35.

    if you can still return it..do it! and with $850 you can get a used Bryston amp.Bryston is way better.

    I turned it up like you said, it just took some time getting used to the range this sc35 has. Its truly night and day compared to that old yamaha.

    Now that I got used to it I can turn it up loud enough to hear voices without feeling that my ears are bleeding from grenade explosions and the like.

    Not sure if they have any left but Costco had them for $750 free shipping. I ordered two. One came slightly damaged and one came perfect. Both work fine. My local Best Buy had used/open box for $799 and they would not budge on the price and it did not have all of the accessories with it.

    But they did have an open box for the SC-37. Got them to sell it to me with a new remote for the SC-57 (because they lost the one for the 37) for $989.18. Pretty sure I got a decent deal? haha I was gonna get it for $950, but I we got into it with eachother because he was "hooking me up" with the newer remote, but I reminded him HE lost the orginal haha Owell, we'll see how this goes

    I would say that is a very good deal. Based on the performance of my SC35 over the past week, I would say you are going to be very happy. :biggrin:
