Microsoft Outlook keeps crashing! Please HELP!

Well I ran one of those online registry & disc clean programs a little while ago and since then, Outlook crashes at least once a day! Tried to do an undo of the fixes but no dice.

I send the error report to Microsoft and all they come up with is to upgrade Outlook.

I'm running Windows XP w/Outlook 2002.

Other than deinstalling and reinstalling it does anyone have any ideas?

    You might not have to "deinstall" (or what we in the biz call "uninstall"), just install on top of the existing Outlook - Outlook Install might even have a "repair" option for this very purpose. It'll clean up any files that got corrupted or removed but likely not mess up your setup.

    Bob will it keep my address book and preference the same if I install the existing Outlook?

    BTW I've been out of the biz for 10 years so forgive the error in verbiage!:tongue:

    I had so many problems with Outlook, I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird, it seems to be more stable than Outlook.
    IIRC Thunderbird will import all of your settings as well.

    It SHOULD, but that doesn't mean it will. Seems worth the risk; nothing you do at this point is going to be foolproof, considering what a crappy state you're in. Of all your options I'd say it's the one most likely to save your settings.
    I had so many problems with Outlook, I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird, it seems to be more stable than Outlook.
    IIRC Thunderbird will import all of your settings as well.

    Unfortunately most companies that use the Outlook system won't let you sync with anything BUT Outlook.

    Hey Joe (Where you going with that gun in you hand :wink:),

    I think your stuck with uninstalling & reinstalling Outlook unless that online registry cleaner made a backup of your registry. BTW never ever use any online tools like that again there just too risky. You might try just Reinstalling Outlook over your existing Outlook but back up all your Outlook stuff first and if that doesn't work I would do the following.

    1. Backup all your Outlook stuff i.e Contacts , E-mails, etc...
    2. Uninstall Outlook completely.
    3. Download CCleaner (It's Free and they also have a great defrager) Install it, Run it (It does give you the option of backing up your registry every time just in case)
    4. Reinstall Outlook and all the stuff you backed up from step 1.

    You could try a repair install instead of uninstalling completely. Should be an option if you go to add/remove programs and then try to remove it. Is it a part of Office, or did you purchase it separately?

    Joe,

    You should be able to just upgrade Outlook 2002 to something newer. It should save all your settings and your address book.

    However, I gotta agree with what's been posted. Download Thunderbird or Seamonkey from Mozilla and use that to manage your mail. It's a simple SMTP client vs all the "enhanced" bs that M$ puts in Outlook. It's less vulnerable to malware and because it's fairly unused, there's security through obscurity with it too.

    I use Seamonkey. It's essentially the old Netscape suite with modern functionality. I manage 7 different email accounts from the same Seamonkey console with ease. Thunderbird should do the same.

    Besides, Outlook is notoriously buggy and vulnerable. Exchange is the better option from M$ but usually, to realize the full potential, you need to be in a managed environment for Exchange. It doesn't do so hot standalone.

    But yeah, for personal stuff, keep it simple. Outlook is overly complex IMO for the simple task of checking emails that consist of SPAM, 90,000 forwards from friends and family with the latest funny/cute picture/email/video and the occasional Nigerian scammers. I'd move to a free client that is easily updateable and upgradable. If you do switch clients and things get ugly or something you know how reach me. At the very least, upgrade Outlook 'cause I know there are issues with 2002 that M$ didn't patch but rather just fixed in later versions. That might be a costly upgrade though, I dunno. I haven't used Outlook since I was in college and forced to use it by the school.

    Thanks loads fellas for the feedback. I've been using Outlook for years and never had a problem until now. I'm going to give your suggestions a shot. . . that being said, John I know where you live Bro! LOL!!!

    One other thing I might try is that I have a logmein account. Sal has logged onto my PC a few times in the past to fix an eff up or two. Maybe I can persuade him when he's not busy to log into my PC and look around as I might just be overlooking something obvious.

    If you've been using the same install of Windows XP for more than 5 years, you would probably greatly benefit from a complete wipe and re-install of your OS. I know its a lot of work, but it would feel like a new machine again. Give you the chance to streamline things and only install the software that you still use. I do it every 2 years or so.

    FYI, 'Exchange' as a client app no longer exists. It was replaced by Outlook quite a few years ago. Exchange is now only the mail/calendar server side of things as Exchange Server.

    A scaled down MS messaging application is Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail (formerly Outlook Express), which is free; info and download here.

    Otherwise I agree that if this is just for personal use Outlook may be overkill and a slimmer client mail app would be better.

    Go into options and disble all plug-ins. Outlook crashing in your scenario can be related to some other program that was effetcted by registry cleanup. I had similar problem and the issue was due to antivirus plug-in.

    Before you do anything, in Outlook, go to File and look for IMPORT/EXPORT. You should be able to export all of your mail and contacts to a backup.pst file. Then if you lose all your stuff in a reinstall, all you have to do is import that .pst file back into Outlook after you re-add your e-mail account.

    I don't see anything under option to disable plug-ins. What am I missing?

    Type this instead
    Start--->run

    Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

    In windows Vista or Windows 7 just go start and type it in the search programs and files space. This should reset Outlook and allow you in.

    If you feel your .pst file is corrupt you can run scanpst.exe which will repair a corrupt header file if it is in fact damaged. To so check this out

    I've had crashes in Outlook also, so here's to hoping both of these help you. I'm using a version the professional version of Office 2010 now that I got from the "Underground". Fully functional, but shhhhh don't tell anyone. Let me know if this helps.

    What Sheradp said. If I have problems with a lookout install that delivers mail locally, it nearly always ends up being either a problem with the pst file or some kind of malware. Copy off your pst, then run scanpst. Also, if you've been running it that long, what size is your pst? I may simply have gotten so large that it's causing memory exhaustion.
