Pioneers wouldn't have been anywhere near your price range even when they were still in production. I think they started shutting down the lines in 2009.
Pioneer plasma display final production run was the KRP500M models and production ceased in April of 2009 in the California assembly plant. Sad.Parasound C1, T3, HCA-3500, HCA-2205A, P/DD1550, Pioneer DV-79avi, Oppo BDP-83, WD Media Server W/HDD,

I went with the 46inch panny and used the difference to get a decent hdmi cable. I expect that he will be watching football 24/7 during bowl week. Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the better choice!Mains - LSi9's

Monoprice.com is a great place to get cheap but good quality hdmi cables. Just my opinion, but there are plenty of other things to spend saved money on than a more expensive hdmi cable.
Nice clean wall mount...attic mounted over the air antenna, etc. Unless he has cable with HD channels or a decent OTA antenna, he will be missing out on a lot of the advantages of HDTV sports watching. -
^^^ he has DirectTV but connects it to an old 32inch tube. Thing has to weigh 200 pounds. I will make sure he gets the hd package.Mains - LSi9's
