...........and SPAM is great lunch meat."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Stereophile had it listed in their "best of" components issue.. can't remember where it rated exactly.. but they claimed it was pretty darn good...

I have heard the same, read reviews of people using it with good results. For the going price of a PS1, can't hurt too much to try, eh?- Jeremy

I've got one of the 1001 models and it's pretty good but my modded Rotel is better. The best model to get is the SCPH-5001. It uses the same DAC but has a better transport. Only thing is it doesn't have the rca outs so you would have to find an AV adapter. Both are really quite nice sounding but won't sound better than a good transport/DAC combo. However they do provide a step up from most universal players.SDA-1C (full mods)

I bought one of these to settle the so-called debate. The long and the short...yes it rolls off the highs--some of which is a good thing if you're not running very high end gear or have some nice glowingly WARM tubes somewhere in your rig. ALL the CDPs I've heard in the lower range--the one most of us can afford (less than 1 grand)....have some digital glare up high).
So what does the Sony sound like on mid-fi equipment. Let's say a NAD integrated and some decent Polk vintage bookshelves? Well it ain't a 1000+ player but it holds up against most 500 dollar players well enough. For 20-30 dollars...it's worth that but I don't disagree with tonyb above or Face.
However...if you're on a BUDGET. Pick one up and listen for yourself. You won't get listening fatigue and you won't hear that AWFULLY 'defined' high end most players in that lower price range have that after 5 minutes sounds like someone running their nails on a chalkboard...the omissions are OK for casual listening--for 20 some bucks?

How does it stack up against my Denon? Which...for some reason is not listed in my rig. Will post that in a bit.HT setup

I heard many good things about the Ps1 player as a CD player. I myself never tried one. Where does it roll off? Like it just cuts the highs and lows and your stuck with a solid midrange?
At what audio point does this go on? Like 10k? and then 30hz?Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
I have one of the ps1's with the RCA outs 1001 I think. It is definitely better than my cheap 5 disk and single disk sony players.
I am running it with an adcom 535 pre and a carver tfm 25 amp with Rti 10s which are on the bright side for music.
The sony 5 disk and single disk player are too bright for my setup, I get fatigue pretty quickly if I listen at 85 db or so for more than 20 minutes. The ps1 player rolls off these harsh highs and allows me to really enjoy my Rti 10s for music, this is great because I can't afford an expensive cd player and don't have the room for a dedicated 2 channel system.
The ps1 cost me less than $20 shipped from ebay. Considering its price compared to the price of the other gear in a stereo setup it is worth a try.
I would love to try a true high end cd player in my setup to do a proper comparison but that will have to wait for now.HT Setup: Onkyo 706; Rotel RB-1075; Rti A3; Csi A6; Fxi3's
2 CH: Squeezebox Touch; Dared SL-2000a; GoldenEar Triton 5 or Lsi9's; Parasound 2125; SVS SB12-NSD; Music Hall DAC 25.2 -
I have 3 of them in the attic and that seems to be where they've sounded the best to me.
I don't have any "high end" CD players, per se, but they in no way sounded better than my Denon DCD-1560, DCM-560 changer, Carver TL-3300, SD/A-360 Changer or any other player I have. Plus, they were a complete pain in the **** to work. Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? Or is it........................Spanky?.................................Sinner. -
You would like Marantz's house sound.I would love to try a true high end cd player in my setup to do a proper comparison but that will have to wait for now."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. I dug mine out of all the clutter and it's the 5001 series. How much different would a CD sound on this thing compared to playing one on a PS3 slim?
-
Believe it or not, these are some "sleeper" players. Of course not as good as a dedicated high-end CDP, but they sound decent.
I also have an Onkyo which sounds great for a low-end player.
