Cfrizz, that makes total sense and thank you for your response. I was thinking the same thing and frankly I don't want to get the UPA-7 and wonder how much better things could sound with the XPA-5. plus I'm sure down the road I will wish I just got the XPA-5 in the first place once I get a dedicated home theatre.

I'm trying to do too much in life and not getting anywhere. I got them when I did to ensure I got them during the sale. Just wasn't ready to play.
2 ch rig is on the backburner for a bit until I finish getting my house in order. I'm kinda concentrating on my new ded. HT setup right now when I can. So I'm cleaning out the room that I had all the boxes for all the audio stuff I bought last year into the attic. The wife is NOT HAPPY that we had to make so many trips-its kinda an eye opener for her to see how much I bought-it is easy to sneak a component in here or there but not so easy to hide all the boxes. Soooo needless to say, I'm kind of in the doghouse at the moment and at her mercy for getting stuff around the house done now (and she means now ).
I'll get there eventually.
Hopefully sooner than later.
No worries.
Just send them to me and I'll break them in for ya.;)

You would do that for me? You're awesome. It hard to find good people to do that kind of thing for others. Man-I'm almost speechless.
I'll get them shipped out on Tuesday OK? I think a couple months of break in would be good for them..____________________

Oh oh, I looked up your receiver, and unfortunately you don't have preouts to add a separate amp. So you would have to upgrade that first. Totally agree. I intend to change that receiver anyway cause I really don't like the decoding on it. Thinking of either a Pioneer Elite VSX-01 or the Emotiva UMC-1. I figure one of those should should kick butt with the Emotiva amp.

totally get the UMC-1 over the Pio-01....well that is if it ends up being a badass processor:DPro-ject RM-9.1 w/ Grado Sonata 1 -> USP-1 -> RPA-1 -> Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grands -
Last night we had a poker party and my friend ended up turning my reciever up to -5. I didnt even realize it till I looked down at the display on the onk 805. I was always afraid to turn it up that loud because before I got the xpa-3, it would of sounded terribly disstorted at the volume being powered by just the 805, but with the xpa-3, it was crystal clear. What a amp! Didnt know the Rti8s could play that loud!Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

That's awesome!
Good thing you have that XPA-3 though, or you and you're friend may of had to have a little discussion! lol -
While the amp won't max out the outlet under normal use, it can pull some high current for louder dynamic scenes in a movie, etc. so you don't want to limit that, which as mentioned on the Emotiva site, can possibly cause clipping to occur (because its running out of juice).
The amount of amps being drawn on the circuit that includes his outlet isn't stated in the post so he COULD max it out if there are other loads on the circuit. Start at the electrical panel and find the circuit breaker than controls this outlet. Turn it off and figure out all the other loads on the same circuit (lights, aquariums, whatever). Add up the amps for all loads, incl est. temp loads and see what they total. For example, maybe all the loads total 5 amps and you have a 15 amp circuit. You then have another 7 amps to go (don't pass 12 total amps...because you want to leave a 25% cushion). Not sure what your amp draws, but that's the general way to approach it. Other factors such as distance from outlet also imp. as extension cords have their own limits, but in general if the distance is not great, you could probably find or make a short beefy extention cord that could do the job. Again, match cord to the max amperage your amp will draw. -

TomB, could you explain how you figure out the other loads and why you have to turn the breaker off to do so? What you stated didn't make sense to me.
Anyway, I was trying to keep it simple for that post re: the conditioner. Personally I would rather see a dedicated line for amplifiers, but that's just me (I needed and added one). When I looked into mine, I found the HT outlet was shared with the entire family room, the ceiling fan, and a dimmable light. And the outlet was about 100' from the panel.
Everybody will have thier own way, depending on experience, to approach figuring out how much current thier system requires. I would either get a Kill-a-Watt EZ (to measure at the rig/each compnent) or a clamp on ammeter (to measure at the panel). Not too many will want to go into the panel although that would be the most accurate way to figure out whats in use on the entire circuit if its not a dedicated circuit.
Here is a blurb from the XPA-3 manual about AC power requirementsEnsure that the unit is plugged into an outlet capable of supplying the correct voltage and current
specified for your model. Remember to account for the electrical power that other components will
require if they share a common wall socket or electrical circuit. The majority of household electrical
sockets in places other than the kitchen and garage are 15 amperes maximum. Most DVD players
and other source components are fairly low current items. When all three of the power modules
are driven, the Emotiva XPA-3 requires a minimum of 10 amperes @ 115 volts
volts. It should be sufficient to allow the other devices such as preamplifiers and A/V source units
to share a wall socket, but power amplifiers such as the XPA-3 and a video display (big screen
or video projector) should be provided a SEPARATE electrical connection on a SEPARATE circuit.
As the XPA-3 has a minimum requirement that can consume nearly one entire circuit, please use
second (separate) electrical connection for other devices. DO NOT plug the XPA-3 into a power
or extension cord unless the device is specifically designed and rated for high current use.____________________
