Emotiva XPA-3 Arrived!

So my XPA-3 came in around 8am this morning. Wow is this thing heavy!
They do a fantastic job of packing the amp as well, double boxed, and cushioned in very thick foam.
Now i just need to find a place to put this monster. One thing i'm going to have trouble with though is the length of the power cord, it's very short, and i have no wall outlet in reach. I have all my other components hooked up to a Monster HTS 1600, but the manual says to hook this amp up right to the wall. This will be impossible for me, i can't move my room around to accommodate this, where i have everything is where everything has to be. So i'm not quite sure what i'm going to do, i won't be hooking this up right at the moment unfortunately.
Time to put the thinking cap on i suppose lol.

does the amp have a removeable power cord? if so.. you may want to buy a longer one...
and congrats... I am looking at that amp too very close.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

There's a nice 6' Signal Magic Power cable on the 'Gon right now. Not sure if that's long enough for you, but it's a nice cable.

Yeah, the sale ended on Sunday.
I guess my only two options would be to either hook this thing up to my surge protector, or look for a longer power cord. -

Why not a GOOD extension cord for the time being?

That seems like a pretty nice cable, all though a little pricey for a 6' power cord. I don't think i need anything fancy. Why not a GOOD extension cord for the time being?
Gordon
I could of done that, but i wasn't in a huge rush to hook it up this morning considering i have to work this afternoon. I'll probably just go to radio shack or something of that nature and see if i can get a decent power cord.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. -
I don't like that they provide an 18awg power cord with a high current amp, so I would suggest replacing it anyway. A good quality power cord under $50 is a good price, esp for the amp. However in your case you need a longer cable.
The reason for plugging into a wall and not a conditioner/surger protector is so that you are not limiting the max current the amp might need. Some conditioners might restrict the max flow.
While the amp won't max out the outlet under normal use, it can pull some high current for louder dynamic scenes in a movie, etc. so you don't want to limit that, which as mentioned on the Emotiva site, can possibly cause clipping to occur (because its running out of juice).
The amp has all the necessary protections and filters built in, so you don't really need the extra protection anyway. As far as I know if you get hit with a surge , Emotiva will cover it.
You best bet (at a min and w/o getting into any of the possible differences in power cords) is to get a longer power cord (maybe 14awg or better) or a good quality power strip that won't limit current.
I don't recall for sure, but the cord that came with the XPA may not have a ground lug. Don't worry about that as the amp doesn't either-so you can use any regular power cord ground lug or not. Of course if the amp DOES have the ground lug, well then be sure you use a grounded cable, but I don't think it does.____________________

I have mine pluged to my monster, better read it when i get home. but why would you not want to protect it?

18Gauge Power Cord with XPA-3 just seems so wrong to me. At least 14 gauge is what I want to see with that kind of amp. The extra 2-3 bucks in the cable won't going to take a toll on them and only do good for their business.
But again, technically 18 gague works fine even though they may runs a little warm to hot sometimes when u crank up the amp under heavy load. Or may not supply the current demand of the amp. But then, it's technically possible to run with 18 gague cord so I guess they decided to go cheap on this one.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. If your Monster has a high current plug then you are fine. I plugged my Rotel 1075 in my 3600MKII using a Miova PC (thanks Janmike finally found a good use for it). If I remember the 3600MKII states you can plug in a highcurrent amp and I'll be fine.
PS congrats on the AMP -

Believe me the 18g will be fine and will NOT get warm when running the Emo even at full tilt. No way will that amp draw enough from the wall socket to even give a hint of warmth. Actually that statement made me chuckle out loud.
IMO, a better ps cable would benefit the sound, but it's more than adequate for the the Emo. and absolutely adquate from a safety POV.
Sometimes you guys crack me up with these kind of non-sense statements. I've seen amps that can run 2-3 times the current with plain old 18-22g lamps cord and not even get warm.
Hell, I have a 1500W space heater that runs for hours with about the same guage cord as the Emo and that just barely get's a little warmer than room temp. after several hours and that's a constant 1500W draw when running (it does have a thermostat)
The conclusions jumped to without basis are rampant sometimes.

P.s. the damn Emo's have current limiting circuirty that will trip loooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg before you "burn" up the stock ps cord even if it didn't it would pull the kind of current nec."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. H9,
No man. I said it can run technically OK but I said I want to see 14 gauge at least with that kind of amp. It's just a point to make that Emo did save a couple of bucks by sending an 18ga cord instead of 14ga. You just read it again at what I said. I am an EE so I know all these stuff and how wires work....I had my hands on experience on many different things to even make any subjective comment on a wire or any sort.
It's not about what u can do what a cable...It's about what u can do safely with a cable. Now, don't jump on me again.

No intension on jumping on you, the first time or now. If you're en EE, I'll cut some slack. Certainly I feel (based on opinion and being in this hobby 20+ years) a nicer, heftier power cable would have been better.
But, that amp will now draw anywhere near the current to surpass the rating of the 18g cable. Not in this lifetime.............not even with a flux capacitor:D:).
IMO, it would benefit sonically with a nicer power cord but that cord or even a smaller 22g or 24g or 26g cord will get hot with the amount of power the amp draws, even wide open.

Thanks for the kind words, H9!
I want to say (which I think) a very fair and constructive thing to the company and from the customer perspective. EMO XPA-3 is a very very very good priced for the kind of SPEC if offers. It's very affordable and looks nice too. I can't comment any other than that till I have bought one and tried like I always do with any other kind of equipments. It's no bashing intended for EMO. I don't own any EMO product and have no hate / love relationship with EMO. But if EMO ever drops their price on the XPA-1, I am willing to give a try for a pair.
What I said earlier was about setting a little higher standard for the very budget friendly company by throwing in a better wire with the amp and I am sure customers will appreciates it very much for not having to spend more on the wire. Again, it's nothing wrong with 18 gague and I know it works fine. But it's about a little higher standard for a couple of bucks to make everyone happy.
To The OP, I am sure you are very happy with your amp and please keep us posted on your impression on this amp.

I bought the XPA-3 over the weekend because I thought the sale was a good deal. I've heard nothing but great things about these amps and I think it will work very well for my Lsi9's.
Sucks about the cord being so short though! I hate that. Oh well, I'll figure out a good place.
Let us know how you like it though. Mine should be here tomorrow and I can't wait! As my Lsi9's are just sitting in a box wishing for some love. I think I'll add the RPA-2 to my setup when all is said and done. -

Talked to Emotiva today, they said it's best to plug it into the wall ,though they have not heard any problems with having it plugged into a power center, they said the amp has everything it needs to be just plugged into the wall. i also asked about a 7.1 pre/amp in the future,he said it's already in the works. so i can't wait for the reveiws on it.

Congrats on the amp im sure you will dig it.wish i lived close by to hear the A7's with this amp.

Hey Metal, Congrats on your buy. I have had the xpa-3 for almost 2 weeks, and like you cringed at the length of the cord, somehow making it work at only the added expense of a longer Hdmi cable for my other source's in my realignment. Have this unit temporarily plugged in direct to a 15 amp plug, not comfortable with my cheapie surge protector. No problems at all! Cant believe how cool this amp runs, Awesome machine! Will be getting a better SP shortly, but for the meantime, no worry's!

I emailed Emotiva customer service earlier today about my issue with the short power cord, and not being able to reach my outlet.
Well, Jennifer from Emotiva got back to me this afternoon, she said she is going to send me a 6' power cord. Excellent, excellent, customer service!!!!
Thanks guys for all the kind words, i'm extremely excited, and i can't wait to get it up and running.

Congrats on your purchase, great amp. Were you in time to get the sale price? Just curious, what receiver are you currently running?
Yea I did manage to get it in time for the sale price which I'm pleased about. I'm building a slow system because of money issues and all, so I'm only going to be running off of a Klipsch pre-amp that I had laying around for now. Eventually it will be an Onkyo 706/806 (whichever I choose). Can't wait for that and I'm sure I'll be itching to finish quicker then I should!
The XPA-3 looks to be on time to be here tomorrow! I can't wait to hear these speakers.
Metal, that is awesome of them to send you a 6' cord! I wonder if I should get in on this as well. I figured the standard would have been 6'.... gah this will be tough. I feel an extension cord will be used right now. What a great customer service they have and service all around. Even listening to their podcasts you just get a good sense about these folks.
Bigred! Its good to see you over here dude! Still appreciating the help although I think I may have another question for you
I'll also get some pics of it and the speakers whenever I get things situated. This is metals thread though and I don't want to steal thunder or Hijack it! His excitement though is rubbing off on me :P -

Hey parasomia, i'd suggest sending Emotiva an email or calling them. Just ask if they can send you a 6' cord, tell them you know people with the XPA-3 and that you know the supplied cord won't be long enough, or if you're getting it tomorrow just tell them you have it and it's not long enough. You actually probably don't even have to tell them anything as long as you give them your order number, they would probably send it to you anyway, they rock!
Don't worry about Hijacking my thread, start your own thread and/or post your pics here, it doesn't bother me at all. All though i'm sure you're going to want to start your own thread even if you do post pics in this one.
And i don't think i can even wait for the 6' cord to get here, i might just have to use an extension cord like Hawkeye suggested, or plug it into my HTS 1600, at least until the cord arrives!
My excitement will just keep growing, i'm sure once i get this XPA-3 hooked up the excitement will last for a while! I absolutely love this hobby! -
I'm still setting things up and figuring out how I want things, but let me say this. These Lsi9's rock and wow they put out a lot of volume! Duh para, I know.
I love the break in process, hearing how they settle in and become fresh!
I would like to say though, real quick, is that yes you'll want to plug it into the wall outlet. I figured my cord was about 5'. Not long enough for me. So I plugged it into a power strip I had along with the Pre-Amp. They were the only two things plugged in. Guess what? It would turn on, but as soon as you got music going.. didn't like it! Would shut itself off. So I found a nice extension cord, you know the big Orange ones, and plugged it into that and into the wall. This isn't one of those 50 foot cords by the way. It is about 8 feet and now everything is happy.
I need a heart emoticon
