Well I have been putting in Sonic Barrier and BlackHole in my SDA 1C's, I will post this in my SDA 1C upgrade thread as well but I thought this could use it's own thread as I don't see this tweek being done very offen.

The back wall is getting treated with the BlackHole from SonicCraft the quality of this stuff is fantastic but pricey

http://www.soniccraft.com/products/damping/blackhole5.htm

The side walls are getting Sonic Barrier from Parts Express this stuff is not as heavy but still nice. I am glad I went this way as the BlackHole would have been to thick for the side walls. The Sonic Barrier is 1" thick and worked perfect..

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-525

I am not done yet but I will update this as I go along. I am very interested in getting these going so I can put my ears to them.. I hope this tweek turns out to be a worth while one, my guess is it will be.

Peace.

Looking good Larry. Let me know how this stuff works out as my 2.3's will be coming apart soon and this may be a nice way to go with them.

Wondering since it's so thick and takes away internal space if it changes the sound?

Supposedly it don't affect it from my understanding. I do know that it should help with Clarity and Depth in sound.

Since air can pass through most of the membrane, it only displaces a small amount.

The Sonic Barrier 1" foam is excellent for general loudspeaker cabinet use. The non-composite nature of this material means that it acts as a sound absorbent across a wide range of frequencies. For situations where the cabinet walls are already acoustically dead, composite barriers may not be necessary-- in this case, the pure foam material can offer a lower-cost alternative with minimal difference in performance. The foam will help absorb unwanted sound from within the cabinet without disrupting airflow between the driver and port. This can reduce unwanted sound reflections and prevent them from exiting through the cone or port. The foam can cause an increase in apparent volume, which can help to offset the space taken up by the driver or the port.

Are you still going to use the rolled up poly? material that is stock or is this in place of the stock material?

Yes, I will be using a little bit more as well.

Yes, you're still using the stock stuffing? Or...Yes, this is in place of the stock stuff?

I'm interested to see how this turns out for you, since I'm going to be rebuilding my 2A's soon. I might have to look into doing this.

edit-Eeh...that Blackhole stuff is pretty pricey. How much of it did you have to use per speaker?

Yes I will be using the stock stuffing as well with a little extra.
Yes the black hole is pricey, I just got 2 sheets enough to do the back walls and the bottom of the cabinet.

You don't have to use blackhole, just use sonic barrier on all the walls.

Thanks for the info. I may have to pick some of this up sometime.

I'll probably just go ahead and upgrade my XO's for now...but I may try this as another future tweak.

That is pretty much the main question I had. Always a bit nervous about tampering with the volume of a speaker...which, in most cases, has been worked out by the Polk engineers. Nice pics Larry....I'm with Curt although I'll be moving a LOT more slowly than he does as I don't entirely trust myself! Nice write up - Just a FWIW...

The 3/4" sonic barrier, while not as thick is a superior product to the 1" - it has far greater dampening abilities...

Ive had great success using this stuff in the past -- excellent tweak. I need to do this to my Super Towers and subs when I feel brave enough to pry them open
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
