Looking for speakers to go along with PSW10

Hello,

I am a relative newbie when it comes to audio equipment. My situation is that a friend gave me his PSW10 (new) which I now want to use as part of a new stereo/AV setup. My first requirement would be a couple of floorstanding speakers and I was looking at the various Monitor editions 50, 60 etc. on Newegg.

I don't want to spend more than around $150 for each but was just wondering which of these would be a good match for the PSW10 in a relatively small room with hardwood floors. I'm not an audiophile by any means but also appreciate good sound. I envision hooking up a lossless music player to this system or possibly streaming audio via wireless and a squeezebox.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you :)

Sound-wise, all of the floorstanding monitors will sound similar - the bigger ones just go lower. In a small room, the 50s might be just fine, considering you'll have a sub to cover the low end. I say, save your $$, get the best deal you can find on the 50s, and take it from there.

That said, the 70s are probably a better full-range option on their own (i.e. - no sub) for music.

When you say small room, it often helps to state your dimensions. We all have different ideas about what that means. Good luck! :)

+1 on the monitors. I'd go with the 60s since they're only 30 more dollars on Newegg.

What kind of AVR are you using? Are you setting aside a budget for speaker wire and interconnect cables?

My main room is about 20' x 20' if that helps.

Right now I'm probably going with the monitor 60's when they have a good deal going. As far as AVR, I have an old Pioneer SX-6 from the 80's but want to buy a new receiver so any suggestions would be appreciated. Something relatively affordable (up to $500) with iPod input and compatible with squeezebox .

As far as cabling is concerned, I have a new 50ft spool of Belkin "Pure AV" 16 gauge speaker cable but nothing else right now. Is this cable good for Monitor 60's and PSW10?

    Thanks!

The 60s are a good choice for your room. 70s would be even better. I do NOT agree that all the Monitors sound the same...the high end on the 70s when powered correctly has better imaging and soundstaging. It is the only Monitor with a cascade crossover.

You want to get an AVR with pre-outs. So Onkyo 707, Pioneer Elite VSX-21, Marantz 5004, Harman Kardon 254 or 354.

Listen to some of those and see what you like. They are all High current AVRs. You may have to spend a little more than 500 or look for a sale or buy used.

Belkin cable is OK for now--everything is relative.

Good choice. They should fill that room nicely, and at quite a reasonable amount of $$... Enjoy! :)

Those 60's are a steal at $120 ea. you will not be dissapointed. IMHO, the Monitors are hard to beat for the prices they can be had for these days. I know I love mine.
