I have a Pioneer VSX 9040txh and I know if I change to stereo it outputs to the 2 fronts and Sub, but what I want to do is be able to switch to nothing but my front two channels for music. I currently have 7.1 speaker setup.

I have tried switching to another memory and turning all the speakers off but my front two channels, but that applies to all my memory settings.

Looking for some advice if anyone could help me out. Thanks in advance.

What you need to find is something like the 'pure direct' mode on the AVR...but NOT all AVRs shut off the sub. Without looking at your manual I wouldn't know. But it is easy enough to find in the manual--sometimes all of ''us" have to break that out and read a bit.

Good Luck..there are a few people here who own a Pioneer VSX-21 which is very similar to your model...maybe someone will chime in?

I have the vsx-9130txh-k and it does have a "pure direct" mode which does only utilize just the two front speakers. I'm not sure how similar the 9130 is to the 9040, but I think they're pretty close.

Ah ha! Pure Direct from a stereo source results in nothing but the front two channels. Thanks everyone.

Pure Direct also bypasses the tone controls, wich may be a good thing (or bad) based upon your feelings about them.

I usually listen in Direct for movies instead of pure direct because it still takes into account the mic'ing of the room. But for music Pure Direct is the way to go.
