CD player skipping

Got a onkyo 6 disk cd player skipping on anything I put in it,Im going to pull the cover off of it,and clean it,is this normally just a dirty lense or is there something else I should look for?

I realize you stated your situation is repeatable with all disks used, but just to rule out your media completely, ensure they are clean and work on another player first (just to really rule them out).

2nd, do you smell anything burning or burned on the circuit board when you open up the unit?

3rd, does the lens arm retract - move when you attempt to read the disk?

-if yes to 2 or no to 3, your player is RIP.

I would recommend using a can of compressed air first. If that does not work then you will need to use a damp cloth to clean the lens. If that does not work, I'm out of ideas.

Skiping is often caused by a laser unit out of alignment. Check online to see if your particualar model can be re-aligned. I had a Denon 3800 that had adjustable laser unit rails and I fixed the problem with some adjustments. It was very time consuming and I had to have a lot of patience but I got it to track properly again.

Everything looks and smells good,lense really wasnt dirty.I hate to lose this unit,it sounds better than my music hall,they use similiar DACS.Its a better piece for the bucks,but its seven years old its a DX-C380.I'll try and find any aligment possibilities

is a dirty lens something a person could clean themselves without mucking it up really bad and rendering it unfixable? just curious

Hey,
Generally skipping is caused by dirty laser lens, so you have to clean the lens by cotton, if the problem will not short out then please contact service center

Another possibility is the spindle bearing. Try tilting the unit at a 45 degree angle. This loads the bearing to one side. If the unit work OK like this, then the spindle bearing is worn out.

One other remote possibility is that the rails and guides that the laser pickup travels on need cleaned and re-lubed.

I agree with some of what was said in this thread. It could be the laser lense is dirty, but if you tried cleaning it already then probably not. It may also depend on what the lense is dirty with. If it's dust then wiping it might do the trick, if it's a film (from anything from grease, oil or anything else that can coat something then wiping it may not fully do it). The laser may very well be out of alignment and could absolutely cause the problem. Finally, so could the rails that guide the laser lens housing if they need lubrication as ozzy suggested.

I had a similar problem with my player having a hard time reading discs, both the initial read and tracking while playing. I opened the machine and lubed the rails for the laser and took the laser housing off and cleaned it. i put it back together and has worked fine ever since. Now granted my CD player was not having as bad of symptoms as yours is, butit was still a similar situation. It could be a combination of things (Laser lens dirty, out of alignment and the rails needing lube). I would start with those.

I think this is my problem,I can jack it up at 35 to 45 degrees by putting two dvd cases under it,and it works flawlessly.
