Hey guys,

I just got a new TV (36" RCA (great openbox deal on it) ) and was wondering if I'd benefit from upgrading my DVD player to one with Progressive Scan. The RCA has a 3-Line Comb filter, but is not HD. Will progressive scan ONLY help on an HD set, or is that a myth. Just curious, thanks.

Some tube sets have higher scan rates like Sony's wega. I believe Component (RGB) inputs on your set is the only way to get a progressive signal from P-DVD. This will also give more brilliant colors. Check your manual, it may tell you what the lines of resolution are for your set. Mantis may have more on this.

The set does indeed have Component RGB inputs available.

Then it should benefit from a progressive player.

Thanks for the replies, now I just gotta convince myself to shell out the money on a new DVD player...glad to see that progressive scans can now be had for as little as $99.

Don't forget to add the cost of a set of component cables, roughly $75 on up.

Does having RGB inputs on a TV mean it can handle progressive scan? I have my progressive scan player hooked up to my tv via rgb and turning on progressive scan messes up the picture.

You need a Digital TV to see progressive scan images. Hooking up your DVD's standard (not progressive) component output to a standard analog TV's component video input will increase picture quality, brightness and color. To get progressive images (60 full frames/sec.) and utilize 2:3 pulldown, however, requires a digital tv. Progressive scan filmlike, with more fine detail and less flicker.

    Actually I somewhat disagree........

I have noticed that sometimes when using interlaced players that the composite feed looks the best overall.Due to the better scaler inside the TV.Example Pioneer Elite sets.....enough said.

Correct, you need a compoment video cable to pass the signal.Only Digial ready or HDTV ready sets can decode the signal.

I would also suggest you use quality cables for video.

Well, I've sent RCA an e-mail asking for their input also (now to see just how long a reply takes...). I thank all of you for your input so far.
