Good luck. I sat in my car at an "instant oil change" location once and the lead tech asked me to start the car when they were "done" so he could check the level. Fortunately I had paid attention and had noticed they had not yet added any oil!

WOW!!! That's just plain scary incompetence!!!:eek::eek:

I wonder if you had cranked her over and burned the engine up if they would have weasled out of taking responibility?

I've changed my own oil since 1979. I had Jiffy Lube do it one time when I was in a hurry in 1996....they didn't tighten the oil filter & also wanted to charge me an additional $179 for various" suggested" fills, wiper blades, etc., etc. Never been back.

    So, how's the oil gun?
The tip was beaten up pretty good and the ball valve in the tip was damaged, but other than that it was ok.

I wil get the final verdict on what will happen with it in the morning.

    I was being a smart-****$~ :p

I thought I read somewhere that in newer vehicles if the oil pressure doesn't come up within so many seconds of start-up that the computer shuts the engine down? Seems like that would be a good safety feature?

In my experience just starting up a motor and then shutting it right down without putting oil back in it, and having the residual from being drained still in the engine, won't usually do too much damage. Anything past a few seconds and you'll probably have an issue.

They are going to fix things in-house. The head appears to be ok, as are the valves and a scope in the cylinder bore of the affected piston shows no damage or debris internally. They will be replacing both camshafts and the bearings. While it is open, they will be replacing the timing chain guides as well. It will also need a new cam cover, so it looks like a bullet dodged. :)

To bad though as I was hoping for a new engine.:D

I do amy own fluid changes, for exactly that reason. With my diesel it tends to get messy and 3 gallons of black oil at a time is gross. Sorry to hear about your jag, I have never seen car doors close better than on a Jag, the fit and finish of their all steel cars is next none.
