Alot of Garmins are on sale everywhere.

Best of all, the Garmin nuvi 1390T is roughly half off at many places.

Cabela's has it for $199

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0045642523015a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Product_liberal&QueryText=Garmin+-+nüvi+1390T&sort=all&Go.y=12&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&Go.x=29

Saw it on Amazon too for $211 new

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-4-3-Inch-Widescreen-Bluetooth-Navigator/dp/B001U0O7RG

It's a $400 unit and it gets pretty good reviews. Has a transponder that is not as affected by bad weather and trees and other obstructions too.

If you look, you might be able to find it cheaper. I went with Cabela's but I'm a frequent customer there for fishing stuff so I get breaks on shipping as well as other discounts so it ended up being cheapest for me.

I had to replace the one that got ripped off from my girlfriend's truck. Insurance would cover it but they were going to bumper her premium up about $200 a year for the claim. All I could think was @#$% that! I'll just get a new one! So I did and it's an awesome deal! Can't wait for it to get here!

Louie, we've been living in this state (moving from S. Philly) for almost five years and Phyllisann still doesn't know her way around because she's scared of getting lost! She's been breaking balls regularly about the GPS and when I approached her this morning about it, I got, "We can't afford it!" Go figure, can't win for loosing!

Dude, $199 is just the price of that one. It's significant because it's Garmin's top echelon of product and iot has all the bells and whistles. There are others for $100 or less from Garmin. They don't have as many features but a Garmin is a Garmin. Arguably the best GPS units on the market. The only ones more accurate are Magellan and Lowrance units. Magellan is the company that built the GPS system for the government decades ago and Lowrance builds GPS guidance systems for all kinds of vehicles but also for GPS guided weapons and drones. But the Magellan and Lowrance units are not real user friendly and I don't even think Lowrance makes consumer level stuff anymore preferring instead to build integrated systems for boats and such.

You can't go wrong with a Garmin. Go to Garmin's website and look at some of the units they have. They should have a "Where to buy" locator on the site as well. You can probably pick up a basic model for about $70-$80.

Thanks man, I don't see where she could balk at $70 to $80 bucks especially with her phobia for venturing out into the cold cruel world in the car! LOL!!!

The prices on amazon.com are really very good, mostly.

We have Garmin and TomTom. Garmin is a more polished implementation, in general, but not at all more accurate IMO. However, for traffic, TomTom does things that the Garmin can only dream of. So, for a road trip, we use the Garmin. For daily traffic in Los Angeles, the TomTom is light years ahead of the Garmin. Long story short: the Garmin has no traffic information for side streets (just check the navteq website), so if traffic on the freeway sends you onto side streets, the Garmin is almost useless in Los Angeles from 06.30 to 09.30 and from 15.00 to 19.00. TomTom traffic not only has traffic information for side streets (albeit limited, and it's a subscription service), but also has what they call IQ Routes, which (without any subscription) basically collects actual travel time information and estimates normal travel times on any given street according to the time of day and the day of the week.

I have a strong preference for Garmin for regular use, but if traffic is a concern, then TomTom is far superior IMO ... and generally cheaper, despite some other flaws (especially lousy TTS "text to speech" pronunciation). With current pricing, I don't see why anybody should drive without navigation of some kind for $100-150.

****, the one I currently have gives me bad routing advice (when I ask it to for routes I KNOW is the best), but it never lets me get totally lost when I explore or am in a strange city 1,000 miles from where I live.

Why should I want to upgrade to get more or less the same routing advice? I bet their routing algorithms in this generation of Garmins are no better than in the past. (At work we have the same or better in use for specialty work).

The biggest things such devices are better at or more up to date on are the POIs.

I am using some off brand I got for $99 some years ago. Even though it does nothing special I never get lost and am not intimidated about going anywhere. I'm sure todays models are much better. I can tell you it has kept me out of accidents just because I know where I am going and what lane to be in. On safety alone you need one. No one should be without at least a $99 model, it just isn't reasonable these days.

I just ordered the Nuvi 1490T for $199 refurbished, shipped. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5589658&CatId=2374
The 5" screen should be awesome. I've always had good luck with refurbs from Tiger Direct.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

Just got the Nuvi 1940T today! Functionally it doesn't blow away my old one, a MIO, but is a nice upgrade. The 5" screen is awesome, the POI works great (sucked on the old one) and seems quite easy to use. It looked new in the box, no signs of being touched previously.

I got my 1390T yesterday. Pretty spiffy! Has all the features of the 1490T you mentioned above except a smaller screen.

I like the bigger screen. My old one was only 3.5" and although it was fine I feel more comfortable with this one. This thing puts out a LOT of volume when turned up. The first time it spoke I almost jumped out of the seat! I sold the old one to a friend, he is probably playing with it right now on his way home. I told him once he uses it he will never be caught without it. ;)
