Got a SACD player

This sunday while driving pass the local HT store, I noticed the big banner saying they are doing inventory clearance sale. Intrigued by it, I decided to take a look. They have plenty of B&W, M&K and Rotel stuff for sale at very reasonable prices. But couldnt do anything other than to eye ball on them as these days cash is hard to find.

Then I found this Sony DVP-NS500V DVD/SACD palyer listed for 100 bucks. A SACD palyer for 100 bucks was too hard to leave so I quickly got that. On my way home I got Diana Krall and Cline Dion on SACD.

I wasnt able to do extensive listeneing on this, but so far I have found SACD sound to be much more open and detailed. I have the exact same album by Diana Krall on redbook CD and there is quite a big difference between the quality of these two. Though the redbook version is also very well recorded but its SACD version totally blew it away. I can hear Diana Krall's breathing so clearly during the vocals. and the subtle mix in surround chanels to imrpove the embiance is also very good.

I am now waiting for DSOTM SACD to arrive and will post detailed findings.

    nice izafar,

I think we have another convert to multichannel audio.

I'm not very familiar with SACD players. how do they hook up to your receiver? DVD audio which i am familar with.. uses 6 RCA cables to your receiver's analog inputs.

    db,
it's carbon copy to DVD-A connection...
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

That's cool! I'm waiting for SACD player prices to drop. I can't wait to hear one. The HMV I go to has an "audiophile" section and there seems to be a lot more SACD and DVD-A now than the last time I checked.

Can you get high resolution sound using 2ch? I don't know much about SACD.

    Organ,
Some SACD disks are 2 channel only, some contain a Multi-channel track and a 2 channel Hi rez track. Hybrid SACD's can have all three. You really need to read the fine print on the discs you're interested in to make sure you are getting what you want.

    Organ,
I second what FrankZ has said. The devil is in the details. I have been doing some SACD shopping lately and am still very confused with the information printed on the labels. It is very difficult to get the complete picture out. The Celine Dion CD that I bought, has some songs in multichannel and some are only in stereo. But it was not clear until I heard the whole CD.

    danger boy,
I am all for multi channel Audio provided if it is done sensibly. It is very easy to get things wrong in the mixing process. Again looking at the example of Celine Dion's SACD, some song's multichannel mix is pretty good and involves mostly ambiance enhancement. But one track "Its all coming back to know", the mixer has taken another approach and suddenly pulls you in the center of soundstage with a lot of activity going all around you. Though the song’s material justifies such a mix, but still it was a very confusing listening experience for me.

Hell yeah! I'm not looking for anything right now, but I would've come away with one too.

    SACD has four varieties:

    1) 2 channel stereo and plays on SACD player only

    2) 2 channel stereo and plays on SACD and CD players - will be marked "stereo- hybrid"

    3) 5 channel and plays on SACD player only

    4) 5 channel and plays on SACD players and CD players - will be marked as "multi-channel hybrid"

You have to specify the outputs on the player and the inputs on the receiver in order to get the player and the receiver to talk to each other.

I don't wanna rain on the joy of multichannel music.I have had sacd and dvd audio for awhile........I own 6 discs.........sad.

I lost alot of juice for them as the titles don't come out fast enough and they seem to redue older stuff alot more......I'm killed on it for now........
    Sorry

Dan, there are tons of classical and jazz titles, although you are right, they tend to re-release old stuff...except Telarc and Chesky (at least the labels that I am aware of, that release new titles)

    polkatese,
it's dissapointing when new music gets released even on Sony labels and no SACD or DVD AUDIO disc can be found.
I'll agree with Jazz and classicalBut I don't just listen to just them.I have a wide taste and would like the multicahnnel world to get going....I don't feel they will last.

It's been along time they have been out and yeat the software section is very small.Poor advertising...ask 10 people about sacd and dvd audio and most of them will not know what your talking about....this is true as my customers buy sacd and dvd audio players and know nothing about the formats. They buy the dvd players for reasons of great video performance.
