Why your friends and family think you're nuts...

1. You consider $1000 for a pair of speakers to be extremely budget friendly.
2. You think amplifiers sound different. Worse, you think CD players sound different!
3. When you buy audio electronics, you buy stuff with fewer features instead of more!!!
4. Your CD player comes with cable yet you buy cable that costs as much as a CD player!
5. You think cables sound different!
6. You play records! Step into the 21st century with the rest of us!
7. You actually listen to music! Not just have it on in the background, but actually listen to it as the main event.
8. You'd rather listen to your hifi than watch TV. Certifiable my friend.
9. You put insulation panels on your walls. Same thing the unibomber did...
10. You think you can hear different MP3 bit rates. Do you have super dog like hearing or something?
11. You keep selling perfectly good equipment to buy new equipment that is for the exact same purpose!
12. You hear things that usually are not associated with music like "air" "grain" "etch" "imaging" "soundstage" "pace" "speed" etc...
13. You're remote control only has 3 buttons!
14. You make people sit in the "sweet spot", whatever that is.

These are clearly warning signs...

Then there is my neighbor with a Bose something or other system. That thinks it sound sooooo much better than my system.

I always laugh at threads like this....

I am running out of space to store speakers, equipment and cables that I replaced with "better" speakers, equipment and cables.

Just had a big box of new "stuff" delivered on Friday.

I was at Pottery Barn on Saturday purchasing two pieces of furniture (end tables). The nice lady helping me was commenting on how beautiful they were. Her face went blank when I explained to her my plan is to cut legs in half to lower the perfectly good tables to turn them into speaker stands.

It's now Sunday evening and I am sitting here in the dark with my lap top listening to my 2-channel rig and surfing the internet trying to figure out what my next upgrade is going to be.

It always makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one....

    What about....

    - Listening in the dark....alone and eyes closed, of course
    - Listening in late evenings....to take advantage of "cleaner" power from the outlets
    - At low volumes....lower distortion
    - Warming up the gear before a listening session
    - Breaking in gear for hundreds of hours before listening
    - A specific "listening chair"
    - Interconnects that are direction-specific
    - Calling myself an audiophile and not using Monster Cable
    - Mass-loading speaker stands with kitty litter
    - Different headphones for listening in different environments

I'm having the same problem Ric except mine is my wife has my audio room completely cluttered with Christmas decorations that we haven't been able to move out to the shed because of all the rain and snow has blocked the way to the shed with a lake of water.

She keeps telling me to just clear a spot on my listening position and listen to music . . . she doesn't get it. There's boxes in front of the speakers, boxes, bags and the Christmas tree all over the room. When I tell her everything is going to mess up the sound and it will just frustrate me, she just rolls her eyes and says, "you're a nut."

Oh yeah and I forgot, she took all my DIY room treatments and piled them in a heap over some of my records!:mad:

I've had a few people ask "what were you thinking" when they see the rig.

The people who moved me from MD to CO continually looked puzzed and kept asking me if I was a musician. I had the horns apart ready to crate them up and I told the supervisor they were really expensive so mark them down on the high dollar list. He explained to me that what I thought was expensive is probably not what they consider expensive. I gave him the cost and and I got this reaction :eek::eek: as he carefully wrote down all the serial numbers... :D

    Curt,

I completely understand...my 12 year old listens to music, if you can call it that, on her ipod speaker without the earphones, often. She'll turn to me and say hey Dad listen to this...and I 'cringe' but I listen...like fingernails on a blackboard...what fathers will do for their daughters!

And yes, I'm guilt of much of the above. Great LIST! My wife definitely thinks I've lost it!

Yeah, that does seem extreme and I'd too lazy to do the switching.

Here are so more that I am making public for the first time....

    - the color of the component makes a difference in sound quality
    - the theory that glasses wearers should take off their glasses for better sound quality
    - along the lines of the Pottery Barn end tables, use "Lack" end tables from Ikea
    - listening to music only in comfortable temperature
    - when looking at Open Houses, scope out possible location for system(s)
    - have five or more copies of the same recording and insisting each sounds different
