Cables Question

OK people...as my handle suggests I am an electrician. To be exact I am a Journeyman Inside Wireman with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I am currently working to install some multi-million dollar machines in a factory that produces something that most...if not all of you use daily.

My question is this.....I currently have all of my speakers hooked up with 16 ga, oxygen free speaker wire. I think the brand is Audio Reference or some such.
Do the high dollar cables really make that much difference, considering the fact that I am wiring several million dollars worth of machines with regular 16 ga wire and they work fine...

One note..I do have some high dollar gold plated stuff in my collection, but i just saw someone selling belden cable for thirty dollars, and I could bring 100 foot of that stuff home in my lunchbox easy.

Is there really that much difference in what costs 50 dollars and looks fancy as opposed to what I work with every day and can acquire for free...

Only your ears can be the final judge. It would depend on your gear as well.
I noticed a difference using more expensive interconnects the most.Well, thats not correct,I got the biggest boost in SQ by getting a better source, pre and DAC.
Im upgrading my speaker cables tuesday and hope to notice a subtle increase in detail and resolution.
Better power cables also gave a little better SQ.
Try it and you may or may not notice any difference. What gear are you using?

As with anything electrical , you must use the correct size to ohm load and length ratio. if it's going in the wall, you know the drill CL3 rated.

Good quality speaker wire will make a difference depending on the length ohm load and quality of your system. Don't spend more then 20% total on cables vs the rest of your system. Even that might be a little high.

Well...my gear is an onkyo NR-807, Monitor 60 front, CS2 center, and Monitor 30 surr. In the next week or so I'm going to upgrade to a SVS sub. All of this is in a 12' x 12' room (spare bedroom for 30 years). The longest run of speaker wire is probably about 10'. To me it sounds great, but I also have the best set-up of anyone I know.

You're wiring millions of dollars worth of equipment with 16 gauge wire in what way?

16 ga wire is pretty standard for control wiring. 24vdc input/output stuff, sensors, stuff like that. Some stuff uses special wires, RTDs, Thermocouples.
Then other things use shielded belden.
