I guess the drugs caught up to him

LOS ANGELES — Corey Haim, a 1980s teen heartthrob whose career was blighted by drug abuse, has died. He was 38.

Haim died early Wednesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said.

"As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees," Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. His mother called paramedics.

An autopsy will determine cause of death. There was no evidence of foul play, police Sgt. Michael Kammert said.

Haim, who gained attention for roles in "Lucas" and "The Lost Boys," had flulike symptoms before he died and was getting over-the-counter and prescription medications, police Sgt. William Mann said.

"He could have succumbed to whatever (illness) he had or it could have been drugs," Mann said. "He has had a drug problem in the past."

Haim was taken by ambulance to the hospital from an apartment in Los Angeles near Burbank.

His friend, Corey Feldman, said he wept when he heard the news.

"This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family and best friend," he said in a statement. "We must all take this as a lesson in how we treat the people we share this world with while they are still here to make a difference.

"I hope the art Corey has left behind will be remembered as the passion of that for which he truly lived," Feldman said.

Haim acknowledged his struggle with drug abuse to a British tabloid in 2004.

"I was working on 'Lost Boys' when I smoked my first joint," he told The Sun. "I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack."

Haim said he went into rehabilitation and was put on prescription drugs. He took stimulants and sedatives.

"I started on the downers, which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck," he said.

In 2007, he told ABC's "Nightline" that drugs hurt his career.

"I wasn't functional enough to work for anybody, even myself. I wasn't working," he said.

The Toronto-born actor got his start in television commercials at 10 and developed a good reputation for his work in such films as 1985's "Murphy's Romance" and his portrayal of Liza Minnelli's dying son in the 1985 television film "A Time to Live."

His career peaked when he became a heartthrob with his roles in the 1986 movie "Lucas" and "The Lost Boys" in 1987 in which he battled vampires.

In later years, he made a few TV appearances and had several direct-to-video movies. He also had a handful of recent movies that have not yet been released.

In 1997, Haim filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, listing debts for medical expenses and more than $200,000 in state and federal taxes.

His assets included a few thousand dollars in cash, clothing and royalty rights.

In recent years, he appeared in the A&E reality TV show "The Two Coreys" with Feldman. It was canceled in 2008 after two seasons. Feldman later said Haim's drug abuse strained their working and personal relationships.

In a 2007 interview on CNN's "Larry King Live," Haim called himself "a chronic relapser for the rest of my life."

Sorry to get off topic, but I used to have the cassette soundtrack and don't remember any songs by The Cure on it. I remember a few tunes by INXS and Jimmy Barnes and Echo and the Bunnymen peforming The Doors' "People are Strange", but can't recall any Cure songs. Then again its been over two decades...

Anyway, that was without a doubt my favorite movie when it came out...I was 14.

I think the fact that at 38 he was living with his mother...NOT to take care of her...but for her to take care of him...is sad...and is just another indication of how screwed up he was.

Ummm...the "Irish-Catholic" comment is pretty much a violation of at least 3 if not more, of the forum rules that have been mentioned ad nauseum recently.

Whether it was funny or not, it was offensive. Whether the guy was living with his mother or not and for whatever reason doesn't really matter. Derogatory statements rooted in mocking both a religious organization as well as an ethnic group is exactly what I thought Polk Audio didn't want to see here? A statement like that is going to be offensive to somebody and if Haim was still alive, he'd probably take offense to it too. I don't see how the statement could have any other intent but to be offensive and derive pleasure at the expense of someone else.

I went ahead and reported his post, so we'll see what happens.

Mocking someone right after they died is never a good thing, no matter who it is. Obviously people have different views of what is funny and what isn't, but with the current atmosphere and recent rule changes we all need to be smarter about what we post.

You're 26 with the sensibilities of a 75-year old. What he said wasn't even remotely offensive.

You want a good Corey Haim joke? Look at his career.

I didn't say it was offensive, I said it was against the rules (go read the first 3 rules in the Rules thread for me).

And wait...so you're saying that i'm 26 with "mature" sensibilities? Man, that hurts!

And why would his career be a joke? He actually HAD a career for a while, and unfortunately it didn't end well for him. Just because he made unfortunate choices doesn't make his whole career a "joke".

There is nothing I see in the rules that prohibit what he posted. He made a joke...bad taste maybe...but not against any rule that I read. Especially in the first 3 rules, I think it a huge stretch to say that it was off topic, trolling/inflaming (gotta look at intent) or discussing religion.

It seems like since there has been some "hand slapping" in the last couple of weeks...we have LOTS of new moderators that want to tell everyone what the rules are.

    3) The discussion of politics and religion is irrelevant to good audio and is, therefore, not allowed on this forum.

So... where were the politics or religion? A joke mentioning Irish Catholicism is "discussing religion" to you? Jesus Christ....

Oh, taht's a religious term! Report me!

I'm not sure how him living with his mother was on topic about him dying, but to each his own.

If it was a vaild reason to report him, it'll be dealt with. If not, i'm sure one of the moderators will let me know and i'll be more understanding in the future.
