Signed backup for trial after couple years of not having for the streaming part. I enjoyed it but will be canceling until they get HD streaming. Other than that its great.

They do have some quasi HD streaming. Not 1080p; I think its 720p. It looks pretty good to me. Its not all movies, and it is highly dependent on your bandwidth (if my bittorrent is open, it goes to crap), but when you get it, I think it looks really good.

I am somewhat worried about that... There were 3 within 10-15 minutes of me, now there's two.

If the closest one folds, then i'll discontinue my service. :(

Just this past month a Blockbuster about 3 minutes from my house is closing. I know its been there at least a decade. Technically its still open, as they are selling off all of their inventory (DVD racks included!) Its on the route of my evening run, and each couple of days I notice a reduction in price of remaining stock...went from 9.99 per disc to 7.99 to 5.99 and now I think they selling at 4.99 per disc.

Anyway, the closing of this store now makes sense given whats been said in this thread. The next closest BB to my place shut down in 2003. I wonder if they are just going to switchover completely to streaming service.

For rentals I stay with regular DVD. BR is not worth $5 more a month. If I buy a movie then I will buy the BR version.

I'm with ya there. If the movie is good enough, I'll go buy the BD.

Besides, its much harder to rip and burn a BD ;)

Yes, Maggiefan touched on my biggest complaint at this point for the streaming movies; you can only get them in stereo, at least on the PS3. I assume this is the same regardless of what you are streaming from?

Anytime I stream and the description of what I'm streaming says "HD" and the signal lock shows "HD" it's HD.

I guess I don't understand those who are talking about "quasi-HD" streaming. If you have the bandwidth and the material is HD, it streams in HD. Recently I watched the entire 2nd season of "The Office" all in HD.

The HD that I get from Netflix (when it says HD) is no where near as good as the HD (720p) that I get from my local broadcast of ABC or Fox. It is also does not have 5.1 audio. That is why I said 'quasi' HD.

As with everything video related, there is a wide range of what can be construed as HD. Some HD looks great. Some HD looks crap. Some DVDs that I have look better than much of the stuff I see that is HD.

Yeah, I agree about the variations as to what's considered HD. And yes, the fact there is no 5.1 audio (yet) is an issue. Frankly, when I stream HD content it looks great, but I admit to being fairly new to the whole HD scene and how much variation is involved.

I agree, the stuff that says HD looks good to me. I have no complaints about the instant viewing, except that I wish more stuff was available.

Your best option is a $100 BD player, IMO. Computer quality is not nearly as good as streaming to XBOX, PS3 or BDP. Also, like you found out, Netflix is using SilverLight 2 which is not yet supported by Moonlight project. I think it also might be DRM in there that is blocking you from using it from Linux. So don't expect it to come to Linux anytime soon because I doubt DRM will be available.

Netflix is worth the money even if you just use the streaming. I easily get my $9/mo worth out of it. I personally have been using my Xbox for steaming. The video quality is really decent.

It won't stream HD to a computer, only the Ruko player, Bluray player that stream and PS3's, probably the Xbox too.

I use my Tivo HD to stream and it looks great on my standard TV. I've been with Netflix for 3+ years and love it. I don't like to drive twice to view a movie and the late fees were killing me  No more brain lock when the store doesn't have the 1st or 2nd title I was thinking of. Can't beat it for $9 a month!

Do you know why netflix can't or won't stream HD to a computer?

Also Sami you mentioned the quality was not as good on the computer as through the Xbox or PS3. Do you know if the xbox or PS3 does any upscaling of the stream from netflix?

The reason I ask is that I was planning on getting netflix and using my computer to stream it to my tv.

It's "won't" and while I don't know the details, I believe it has something to do with copy protection. Studios don't want Netflix to stream into a computer where it is easier to copy. That is why the quality sucks on a computer.

I have the TiVo TCD652160 HD DVR; it connects to my home LAN for updates, Netflix, YouTube, and a few other pay services. I really like the unit, but if you're considering Tivo, I'd consider waiting until they release their new "Premiere" units with extended recording capacity (45 or 150 hrs of HD).
My unit records 20hrs of HD or around 170 hrs of standard def.

A lot of brands of Bluray players are getting into the streaming thing now. Maybe they are finally seeing that people want that extra flexibility. All of the new line from Sony do the streaming, and the prices are still in line with the older models. Some of the newer HDTV's also have the streaming built in.

Yep, I stream more stuff thru my ROKU (from Netflix) than I actually use the DVD's in the mail. But, I don't need to watch every new release the day or week or month it comes out. Netflix has lots of great TV series, Documentaries, Independant Movies, etc which you can stream and in HD quality where avail. I am very content and between my DVD queue and Streaming queue, I have the rest of 2010 covered as far as choices.

    H9

How is the ROKU from a sound quality perspective? Have you streamed any music from Pandora? I shot OPPO CS an email asking if they were looking at integrating Netflix and streaming support into the BDP-83 and they indicated that it will likely require a different component.:( I'm now looking at the ROKU and wondering if it is a good option for streaming audio content as well as getting going with Netflix.
