speaker static

First of all I am new to this forum and to home audio. I just recently purcased the Polk RM85 Home Theatre System and a Sherwood RD-7503. I have the speakers connected to the receiver with 14 gauge speaker wire. I have a cable box and blue ray player running to the receiver with an HDMI cable and a HDMI cable running to the tv. The probem is when I turn the volume down while I am listening to a source, there is some faint buzzing sound coming from the speakers. Is there a problem with the way I have hooked up the speakers, is it faulty speakers, or is it a problem with the receiver? I really don't know where to start to pinpoint the problem Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am new to this wonder world of Home Audio.

It could be a number of things, maybe electrical noise coming from your house wiring. start with a simple set up as possible FM tuner and keep on adding things and keep checking to see when the static comes into play.

Thank You, I will look into that once I get some more free time. Could it possibly be the receiver since it is coming from all the speakers?

yes it could be, but like I said it might be noise coming from your electrical system in your house, all kinds of good stuff.

If it mostly happens when you play with the volume knob, then I guess you have an old receiver with dirty knobs. They can be cleaned, but never with 100% success. -
Unplug the cable box from your receiver and see if the noise goes away. Often that type of noise is directly related to a ground loop. If unplugging the cable box fixes the problem, you'll need to get a ground-loop isolator and put that inline with the coax cable coming into your cable box. The Jensen ISOMAX is highly regarded around here.____________________________________________________________

Highly unlikely, would gather it's probably a ground loop. Are you useing any kind of power conditioner ? Most ground loops occur by way of cable boxes or having too many things plugged into one outlet. Try unplugging the cable box and see if you still hear a buzz. Make sure the power cables don't run along with the speaker cables also. If you have to cross them,do so on an angle, sometimes they affect each other if run side by side.HT SYSTEM-
