All of a sudden, while watching tv with the Adcoms on, I got this horrible crackling noice coming through the right channel. I immediately jumped up and shut it down. I have not attempted to, nor will I attempt to turn it back on until I do some checks.

Just exactly what should I check first? Crap,...this sucks!

I always check my connections first.
Banana Plugs are notorious for coming loose. I'm to the point now of checking them weekly on my older ones. My newer ones I use now get soldered. Cables can lose contact via oxidation, loose or hanging wires can be loosened easily causing weakened contact. fuses can also lose contact. Check out everything obvious.
    Just basics to look for.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your and do a good luck dance to the audio gods while I sacrifice a Bose on your behalf.

Ok, whew! All is well. First thing I did was pull all fuses and check them. Good. Checked dc voltage across the speaker terminals of amp...half a volt...so far so good. I went ahead and took the cover off. Not much dust, but I blew it all out anyways. I used a MagLight and looked all around the capacitors for any sign of leakage....still all good???

I figured I might as well remove and clean every connector I could find. Started with the hardest to reach, I moved on up and came to a couple small connectors on the input board. Wouldn't ya know it...The connector that connects the signal in to the pc board was soooo loose that as soon as I touched it, it literally fell off! Must have been from all those years of moving them unused in their boxes.

Anyways, I buttoned it all back up and am currently enjoying a few brewskis to some Rush...2112. Ahhhh Life is good again!

HB27, thanks for the Voodoo dance...I am now a believer!

Glad you're up and running again. Connections do come loose. No money out of pocket is always nice.
Ive got an Adcom Pre that does the same thing. It's the volume board on mine that gives me fits. Every couple of months it acts up. I have to clean and "jiggle" the cable to the volume control.
I ran into a lot of the same thing on Yamaha CDP and DVD players. The ribbon that connects from the main board to the face has contact issues. As you're looking from the front of the unit the ribbon cable on the lower board loses contact on the left two connections. I usually give them a light shot of De-oxid (GC Chemical) and shove them down a little deeper into the connector. It works for 9 out of 10 probably that I run into.
