Seems like a lot of people who bought Panny plasmas are starting to have issues with rising brightness levels.

Anyone experienced this first hand?

Sudden brightness acceleration has been a trouble for a long time. It is my understanding that Toyota is somehow responsible...:p;)

I love the Panny's but they were out of my budget when I was looking for a TV.

Same here, I bought a Panny Viera 42" 720p last May and haven't had any issues with it.

Admittedly it doesn't get a lot of use, but it still hasn't had any problems.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

I think this first came up on the AVS forum. I have a 54V10 Panny no problems noted.

By the way the guy at CNET went on to say that of the sets owned by the folks at CNET don't have any problems. But they are running tests and will for 2 months. They will than post any results good or bad.

Really? You can get a 50" Panny Plasma 720P for $699. The PQ on that set will rival many 1080P sets costing 2 - 3x times that cost. Panny has been pretty affordable when it comes to their plasmas.

I have noticed that the factory set up of these Panny Vierra from 37" up to 54" is maxed out to look good. If you reduce the brightness level -10, picture looks very dark.

If my 50" Panny plasma can give me 4 to 5 years of enjoyment, I will be happy.

Two and a half years ago, the Panasonics were running about 400 bucks more than the LG I picked up. I know today that gap is considerably less and that the TV I have is about 600 bucks less than I paid for it then...

I have my contrast down to 50 and brightness to 59 and my panny really pops. THX mode is dark but looks great for movies.

I have a 42" Panny in the bedroom that I have had since 2003 and still going strong.

You should get 22 - 30 years out of the current plasma's depending on viewing habbits.

    Some info from the web:

Panasonic: States in new specifications that new plasma TVs and monitors are good to 60,000 to half life.

Sony:Now out of the plasma market. Does not list a figure for LCD lineup.

Samsung: Lists 60,000 hours for plasma lineup.

Pioneer: States 60,000 hours of use in their 2008 models.

Sharp LCD panels: States 60,000 hour life.

For consumer use these numbers should be comforting. Plasma Displays are now about equivalent in longevity to LCDs, which typically state 60,000 hours. Consider that these figures are a great amount more than old CRTs, which regularly post life span to half brightness at 25,000 hours. Let's put these hours in perspective. The average U.S. household watches 4 to 6 hours of television per day. Staggering. Taking a mean time manufacturer stated longevity of 50,000 hours of usage, times our average 5 hours per day, calculates to over 27 years of usage. Now, there are varying degrees of phosphor ignition along the way (the same way a CRT fades). Dissipation begins the moment you turn the set on. After 1000 hours of usage a plasma monitor should measure around 96% of its original brightness, which is barely noticeable to the naked eye. At 15,000 to 20,000 hours the monitor should measure around 80% brightness, or to state is technically, 80% of the original phosphors (gases) are being ignited.

About a 20 year life span.
