2-channel guys...DDD, ADD or AAD?

Ok, I had a discussion the other day with a hardcore audiophile buddy of mine and an interesting discussion came about that I don't believe we have discussed here at Club Polk. At least to my knowledge we haven't.

Here goes. I have never met anybody who was so dog-gone crazy about not wanting to hear a DDD disc. He loves AAD and can tolerate ADD discs. I really haven't paid that much attention to that because there are some great DDD albums out there [Dire Straights - "Money for Nothing"] and I have plenty of other CD's that are not DDD that sound great too.

All I care about is whether or not it's recorded well. Are any of you anal about or have a preference as to which one?

    can you describe what each acronym means?
    Main 2ch -
    BlueSound Node->Ethereal optical cable->Peachtree Audio Nova 150->GoldenEar Triton 2+
    TT - Pro-ject Classic SB with Sumiko Bluepoint.

    TV 3.1 system -
    Denon 3500 -> Dynaudio Excite 32/22

    Each "A" stands for analog and the "D"s stand for digital. Look at the back of the jewel case of most any CD and you will find one of these three. It's let's you know how the original recording got to the CD in the first place

    So... AAD was recorded analog, then mastered analog, converted to digital on the cd?

    DDD is digital through all three stages?

    Who cares?

    I'm either DDD or AAD. Something about the ADD recordings just don't quite cut it to me.

    The closer to the master the better. AA or DD.

    Bingo. Besides, I couldn't resist the next Sarah Brightman CD regardless of what 3 initials were printed on the back of it. :D

    I checked Amazon and AllMusic.com but did not see any SPARS code information available. I could be wrong (didn't check that hard).

    Jet, you have Dire Straights "Money for Nothing"? If not, name a popular CD you own that most folks would have.

    If it was recorded recently, then you're probably listening to ADA or DDA. Studios have been moving away from tape.

    Older recordings are all going to be at least ADD, probably mostly AAD. It's more about the care taken in the original recording than anything. There are some ASTOUNDING analog recordings from the 50s....

    A good recording and a well mastered disc is more important to me. Most everything new (since mid 90s) is recorded on a digital master. Virtually all older stuff (prior to the 80's) started on an analog master tape. In the 80's, there was some of both. Many early digital recordings didn't sound great.
    For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

    I suspect that now means DAA, or DDA. Take the digital, turn it into analog, and put it on vinyl. ;)

    That is how some current stuff is done but I still like the big wide tape as the original. People who do the mixing like the versatility of digital, thats for sure. If you want perfectness I guess that is the way to go.

    I clicked "I could care less" but I've heard and own all of the above and if the recording was crap DDD makes it sound worse. If the tape hiss wasn't attended to properly AAD sounds like crap.

    For the most part however I prefer AAD, the more analog involved the more natural it sounds to me.

    The poll is showing some numbers I wasn't quite expecting. Interesting.

    For the record, I could care less and that's how I voted. So long as it sounds like a great recording? I'm fine. I guess that when it comes down to DDD, AAD and ADD [so long as it's a good recording], I'm more interested in enjoying the music that's being played than getting anal about how it got to the disc in the first place.
