Hey all, It's my first post so be nice :p. I have a problem with my 805 receiver not displaying true-hd or hd-master playing the dark knight, transformer II. Wondering if that's because of my 5:1 setup? Does true-hd or hd-master require 7:1 in order to work?

On the receiver, HDMI audio out to off.
On the the player, HDMI set to pcm.

Here's a lil info on my system: Its mainly for watching movies on blue-ray

Main: Rti A9
Center : Csi A6
Surround : Fxi A6 ( ordered another pair 2 days ago )
Sub : Velodyne Dps 10
Onkyo: Tx Sr-805
Bluray: Sony Bdp S-300
HD-DVD: Toshiba HD-A2
Tv : Sony xbr3 40"
Monster Home Theater Reference Power Center HTS3600 MKII.

Here's what the audio setting available for the blue ray player;

DTS - DTS or Downmix PCM (DTS )

DTS Downmix - Stereo or Lt/Rt (STEREO)

Audio ( HDMI ) Auto or PCM (PCM)

I've tried every settings in here back and forth but getting same results. I've read on forums that the blue ray player has to be set to output bitstream and not pcm but i don't see where that function on my player.

Thanks in advance.

whats the display on the 805? Does it read MULTi PCM? If so it is definitely outputting the audio in high def.

How the audio sounds in LPCM VS Bitstream has been debated over and over on many of forums

If thats not working set the player to AUTO and scroll thru the available audio formats until it reads DTS MSTR or Dolly TrueHD

Maybe that player is older and does not have the newer audio formats, its best to read the manual

Set your BD player to bitstream via HDMI, assuming that option is available in the setup menu. Or what acsubie says is also true - I believe the Onkyo would display MULTICH in the display window.

I've had three different BD players bitstreaming to my Onkyo 805, and I've always had the appropriate Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master to show on the display...

    Good luck!

EDIT - I just looked at the Sony BDP manual, p. 48. Looks like your player cannot bitstream TrueHD or DTS MA, if I'm reading it correctly. So you should be getting the decoded TrueHD/DTS MA sent to your Onkyo. So looks like you'll never see the TrueHD/DTS MA indicated on the Onkyo's display window...

My onkyo only display multi-pcm. Looks like my player cannot bitstream. My question is am I still getting the same sound quality? Or time for a new blue ray? Any recommendation on decent player under $500? Oh, do I need to replace my old HDMI cables? I believe there are 1.1 or 1.2 not so sure.

LPCM is still a lossless format, so you aren't losing anything. People will debate that Bitstream is the way to go and that LPCM suffers from too many "conversions" and isn't as good. I have heard both and use LPCM from my PS3 to my Onkyo 806 and the results are nothing short of awesome. You are getting the same sound quality as you would if you were running Bitstream IMHO, and the only thing you are "missing out on" is the Onkyo saying "Dolby TrueHD" on the front panel. looks to me like you have a pretty BA rig, sit back and enjoy it. *1,

I also run Blu-ray from a PS3 to an 805. When I return from the East I may hook up my Pioneer blu-ray which can bitstream HD-Audio and see if I can hear a difference...I doubt there will be any discernible one!

Yes - the Oppo BDP-83...by a penny! ;) I upgraded a few months ago from my slower-loading Pioneer BDP-51FD* (need to sell here or Ebay) and have not looked back. I assume the new Oppo BDP-80 loads just as fast. Plusses are DVD-A and SACD formats and loads of video adjustments if you like to tweak the picture.

But if you're overall happy with your current Sony, then probably no need to upgrade.

    * to be fair, the PQ and features of the Pio were also great, and great build quality. Just took longer to boot up and load discs...

The sound quality should be the same. Your Blu-Ray palyer is decoding the HD soundtrack and outputting it PCM to the reciever.

If you could bitstream, the player would send the data to the reciever for decoding and you'd see the "Dolby True-HD" or "DTS Master" on the reciever.

Either way, the net result should be the same.
