Hello, I reciently bought a Sony STR-DN1000 reciever (with 110 Watts per channel) and I am not sure which would be the best Polk Audio speakers to match it with. I already have a Polk Subwoofer but need the center channel, bookshelfs (fronts) and the surrounds. Thanks for helping!!

I think you'll have to go down to *stereo shop of your choice* and do some listening comparisons. As far as power goes, your amp should run the average bookshelf speaker no problem so you're basically down to what kind of sound you prefer. Highly subjective.

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

You're going to want to go with TSis or Rtis depending on your budget and tastes...the Sony would probably be better off power a bookshelf in either series or and entry level Rti tower (A5), or any of the TSI towers as they are pretty easy to drive.

But do listen...to both. Also...how big is your room and do you want to go with towers or bookshelves? What Polk sub are you running?

Budget would help also, adding to cnh's suggestion of the RTi's and the TSi's, look into the "older" Monitor series as well. Newegg sells the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. They are getting harder and harder to find but when they do have them in sock, they are usually for some pretty crazy prices. IMHO, they are the best bang for the buck for a good starter 2 ch/HT setup. I love mine, and have had them for a little over a year now. Only problem is, you can't get your ears on them at a showrom, since they are no longer sold in stores. Good luck and welcome to Club Polk.

Thanks for your reply cnh/Jeff. I currently have the PSW10 powered subwoofer.
TSis are the speakers I was looking at, (Center CS10, Front TSi 200, Surround TSi 100) I am worried about purchasing the TSi100's as they have a recomended amplifier power from 20-100w/per channel, only my reciever is 110 w/per channel. Is there a chance I could damage the surrond speakers?
The family room size is 14 feet by 16 feet.
    Thanks again for you help!!

    Hi,

A common misconception is that too much power will fry your speaker....if it's good clean power...it most definitely will not. What will destroy your speakers is running your amp to distortion levels.

In reality your Sony cannot generate 110 watts/channel all channels driven...it's probably going to be more like 50 or 40 watts driving all those speakers. So you have NOTHING to worry about. Also, the power ratings given to speakers are not gospel...

Let me give you an example....I have powered M30s (which are the forerunners of the TSI-100s) with a 200 watt/channel amp and didn't blow 'anything. In fact they sounded 'better' than ever with that amp?

You have a nice system shaping up there...the only thing I might think about is going with the larger CS2 if you have the room for your center. The center carries more than half of your surround info and the bigger, badder, the better!

Don't worry about it not matching the M40s--it does!

Also, don't over drive the PSW10 or it will put out port noise! Keep it at 12 o-clock or less...

And enjoy your new system...of Sony's entry level AVRs the new 1000 is by far their best in a long long time. It's heavier and more powerful than any in recent memory. Most entry Sonys have weak amp sections except for their ES line of AVRs. But the 1000 is an 'improvement' in the lower series.

I have a sony DH800 which uses the same amp as the DN1000 and have the polk RTi line of speakers. It does a fine job driving them. If you could find some of the older Monitor speakers they would be a good buy and even easier to drive then the RTi series.

+1 on cnh's post, very good information there. I would also recommend getting the larger CS20 if you can fit it, because it is pretty beefy. Ya never know, someday you may want to upgrade those 200's to get some 400's or 500's, then you can put the 200's as surrounds. IMHO the center channel is the most important speaker in any HT setup, something like 50-75% of all audio is formatted to play through your center, so you don't want to skip on it. He is also right about the power to your surrounds, don't sweat it, you will be fine. That Sony won't push anywhere near 100W to those surrounds, and even if it did, it is much easier to damage a speaker by underpowering than it is by overpowering it. Welcome to Club Polk.

Thank you cnh/Jeff, I am glad to hear about the watts issue will not be a problem. Sorry if these are basic questions! ;) But, I have another one for you, when you suggested I keep my subwoofer at 12 oclock or less (so I dont overdrive it), are you reffering to the volume knob or LOW PASS (Hz) knob?
I will take your advise and get the CS20, it definetly sounds worth it!!
    Thanks again!

The volume knob on the back of the sub...don't go too high because the psw10 will bottom out on you! You can go lower--see where it sounds best! And once set just raise and lower the volume from the AVR! If you have the sub hooked up through an AVR LFE out into the crossover bypass inputs on the back of the sub that other knob can''t 'do' anything because the AVR will decide the crossover point.

You will be happy with that CS20, just keep in mind that it is a beast and can be difficult to fit into most HT racks/entertainment centers. The CS20 will not dissapoint, trust me. I have the CS2 which is the Monitor series equivilant to the TSi lines CS20, they are a very similar speaker. Good luck and keep us updated.
