I wandered across this clamp that looks pretty good (nice website anyway). Anybody have any experience with it?

Paul that looks like a weight not a clamp. Joe recommended this to me and it works great and is a clamp that is somewhat like Joe's in design. If you can find one of Joe's that would be good too.

Paul, indeed that is a weight and IMHO practically useless. You'd be much better off with the clamp linked above. If you do go the Clearaudio Twister route I can send you some delrin shims to place under the record to augment the benefits of the clamp.
BTW Joe Paraski is putting up one of my clamps for sale. I've already recommended this to Harry so I don't know if it is still available. -

I may probably be interested if it doesn't sell elsewhere -
It's still available but I haven't put it up for sale yet. Waiting till the end of my auction on ebay to see where I'm at "moneywise" for that projector.

Smart move Joe, not that I am biased or anything!:D -
PERFECT!. Since it looks like I would be 3rd in line for any potential sale of Joe's Clamp, I may go ahead and get the one from ClearAudio.
A follow-up question would be one asked a few days ago in another thread: Does it make sense for me to put a $100 clamp on a $350 TT?? I have replaced the stock cartridge with a Shure M97xE (only because I ruined the stock cart:o:mad:). Haven't had a chance to listen yet because I didn't realize I'd need a new counterweight with the Shure. I should have the counterweight by Tuesday.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

Paul my $90 TT benifited so yes. That SHure will need a week or so to settle in but should sound good right off the bat.Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)

Absolutely! I've always maintained that turntable manufacturers who don't provide a clamp for their offering should be arrested. -

About 35 hours for the stylus mount to loosen up is a good rule-of-thumb. -

My questions couldn't have been answered any better! Thanks.
Joe, I'll take you up on the offer of the shims. I'll shoot you a pm with my address. I'll gladly pay shipping costs + a little extra for your time and effort to mail them. Much appreciated.

You rock Joe! I'm scared to death that someday I will loose your famous clamp. I also use The Clamp on my VPI to hold the record during the vacuum. The little black checker size screw on clamp doesn't work all that well. The Clamp is a classic!Carl -
Thanks for the kind words Carl. You're not so bad either big boy!:D

I was looking around for a clamp and thought this one looked interesting. The price is appealing enough. I might even keep an eye open for something from the hardware store to be substituted for it and get out my trusty Dremel tool.

Nash, that "clamp" is the same design and material that VPI used on their tables 25 years ago and they abandoned it because it simply didn't work well and caused the record to dish on the platter and had no damping properties.
As a matter of fact THAT one as well as the Goldmund clamp at the time and a few others are what inspired me to design and manufacture a better clamp way back then.
IMHO You are better off spending the extra money on the Clearaudio Twister clamp. You will have better control over the down pressure and the delrin base will help with dampening vibrations. You will realize deeper bass, a more stable soundstage and imaging as well as a lower noise floor.

FYI- Joe, the link to the Twister in your above post shows that it's on backorder as of now.
Anyone looking for one can also check out NeedleDoctor, same piece, same price. And they ship prettty fast, IMO.

Can be found here too. With Joe's shims it makes a definate improvement in sound.

Their selling like hotcakes because they got the design right and the proper materials for a record clamp, i.e. brass collet and delrin base. The only thing that surprises me is that they don't offer shims to give the reflex action a real boost. -
With all these retailers selling this clamp, I would think you could barter the price down.

Thanks for the 411,it sounds like I will be in the market for a Twister or its equivalent soon then. Adios

Joe,
If I end up getting the Clearaudio (because The Clamp is just not available), would I be able to buy a set of shims from you?
Thanks,

The shims are on me Bro. When you buy your clamp, PM me your address and I'll mail them out to you. Better hurry though, I'm running low and won't be making any more.
BTW have you tried the other websites listed above. I believe they are in stock at the needledoctor and audioadvisor. -
Joe, do you think shims would have any effect on the sound when used with the Bren 1 weight, or are they only useful with a clamp?

No Jim it won't help with just a weight. It helps stregthen the reflex action of a reflex clamp.
What would happen if you tried to use the shims with a weight would be that the record would just float over the platter thus negating any benefit you may get from the weight. -
Thanks, That's what I thought, but wasn't sure.
-
That clamp looks like a waste of money. The ClearAudio is a step in the right direction.
Joe, we need to get your clamp back in production. Have you found any drawings? I know a local machine shop that might do it. In this economy the pricing might not be too bad. If we could get some preorders and a few investors we'll get your clamp back on the market.Carl -
