Joe, I know you mentioned having a refurbed Shark. Never a problem with mine. (Knock on wood.) I've always been careful to keep the nozzle and/or vinyl moving during the process. Steam works real well removing gunk that gets embedded no matter how well you scrub it.

I'm aware of that and I used the steamer while the record was rotating on the 16.5. Like I said I'm heavy handed take that and add it to the problems with the refurbed Shark and I got trouble. I use a four step method without the Shark now and I believe I'm getting the record pristene clean.

I'm just one who've had a bad experience with the steamer. I've not seen anyone else have problems with it so it is just me.:o

Try using a wire brush. That seems to remove most blemishes. ;)

I wish I could find it on the 10,000 useless channels on Comcast. It would be set in my DVR just like the Stooges.

I say this because I'm heavy handed and have scorched some records using it. I'd say keeping it no less than 3" to 4" inches above the record would keep it from causing any scorching.

I believe your post but I wonder what is different than my experience? I tried my best to melt some grooves and gave up because I got tired of holding the steamer in place after a few minutes.

Welp. Thats it folks. I'm hooked! I've never really heard a record until today. And I love it. Seems like what I've been looking for. DARK. But not dark? Can't describe it. But it sounds stellar to my ears. Bass is very different also. Hell, its all different. Its all warm and cuddly. Its perfect.

Time to get back into Stereo!!

This initially was just an investment. I got the table for $100. A broken table of the same model just went for $250 on ebay so I knew I could make money on it. But I wanted to test its functionality before I listed it. So I bought a $20 Pyle phono pre off Amazon to get the testing going. It got here today. Well.. The gain on my tube integrated I built is low. And the pre did not provide enough extra gain to get things going. It was better. But still not enough to make sure the table was sounding OK. So needless to say I was pissed. And was about to give up and sell it as is. Then I decided to take it into the theater and hook it up to the Receiver in there. Viola! Sweet sweet music. I knew immediately this was going to be something I wanted to pursue. And this seems like a damn good table to start with. Especially given the price I paid.

So. Here I am looking at Pre's,amp's, and speakers again for a 2 channel system.

How far down the rabbit hole will we end up this time.

Yep, its a great sound. And get this, every dollar you spend up to at least $10K keeps getting you more and more without too much in diminishing returns. You would be blown away with a $1K preamp and a $1K cartridge... and it can get a lot better than that! :)

Don't worry, you have decades of time to get into all that.

The table you have is a very good table and above entry. Upgrade the pre reasonably with a quality (not necessarily expensive) phono section or stand alone. A mild upgrade in the cartridge as you next step will put you at level you can enjoy for a long time. As this entire thread has shown, you can quickly start throwing alot of money at analog. Don't lose sight that some reasonable money can get you a good start and the other money can be (should be) used for the albums (check out George Grand's listings). Basic cleaning protocols are always open for "lively" discussion, and all sorts of equipment and solutions are out there. Lots to mull over and lots of time to enjoy the steps in front of you.

IMO, I wouldn't dick too much with the table right now....it's a VERY nice table. First, get your phono stage in order....and you need not go super expensive here. The NAD PP2 is an excellent phono stage for not a lot of coinage, for example.

Then, if you, no ****, are going to play vinyl.....I hate to sound like a broken record, I vacuum cleaner is a MUST have. Now, the VPI 16.5 is, IMO, the sweet spot. As a MINIMUM, I'd get the Nitty Gritty that Audio Advisor sells (I think they still do)...and pair it with an old turntable (sans arm) to use as a scrubbing platform...more cumbersome but still effective.

In the end, spending that money will SAVE you money in permanently dicking up your LP's and stylus...

    Amen!
Nik by playing your records dirty you will be damaging the records as well as the stylus.
