Bought My first TT today and Need Help!

Don't know if I did good or not yet. But a TT popped up on my local Craigslist finally. So I bought. But I don't yet know if it works or how to work it..

I don't have a phono pre amp. So I have no way to hook it up yet. All I know is that is spins when plugged in and turned on.

There is a metal cap with what looks like thin fishing line attached to it. I don't know where this goes. The is also a metal rod that looks like it should be attached to the tonearm some how??? And does the needle look OK?

Can anybody help me out. Heres some pics. If you need more I can take them.

I know this is pretty bland. But I'm pretty ignorant on the subject.. If you need more information or pics. Just ask and tell me what you need to know from me about it...

Its a Music Hall MMF-5 with a Goldring Cart 1012GX. Is this good? What is a TT like this worth in working condition?

TIA for any help..

Nik

Nick, the anti skate hangs on that little cylindrical piece of metal with the three notches sticking out between the arm and counterbalnce wieght. Depending on your cartridge weight, the little loop at the end of the string will connect to one of the three notches. Then, the remainder of the string hangs over the metal hook which suspends the antiskate weight.

I actually just figured that out on my own.

I have the player hooked with no phono stage to my tube amp. And with it turned all the way up. I get music.

So I think the player probably works...

I'm stoked. I've wanted a table FOR EVER!.

    Just need a pre now..

Get the Jolida. It's the bigget bang for your buck in audio. If you are on a budget. Don't waste your money with anything more or less. JOLIDA JD-9A, period.

I think I'm gonna get a Cambridge Audio 540p to get me going.

The CA 540p is a good inexpensive phono pre, as well as any of the Pro-ject phono box's. The Jolida is a good one, however there's some good competition at it's price point depending on what the rest of your system is.

That should sound pretty good. I wouldn't use it on a glass table although I'm guessing you just have it sitting there for the pic. Congrats! Maybe you have an old receiver with a phono pre in it sitting around to give it a try?

Nope. I was hoping my theater Receiver would have one. But It doesn't.
Seems I am dead in the water for a few days.

So. Does anybody know what this table is worth? Just wondering if i did good or not.

And yes it was just sitting there for the pic...

Is it a MMF-5 or 5.1? I have the MMF 5.1 in one of my systems, good table. It's basically made by Pro-ject and has the Pro-ject 7C arm on it. I'm not sure what arm(s) they used on the 5?

your Goodwill has much better vinyl prices that the ones here do. IF that same 4 lp box set was at my GW it would easly be between $4 to $9.

It's a good table however I'm not a big fan of the Goldring cart it comes with. The cart sounds really great but with the tonearm correctly aligned the cart sits extremely low. Some records don't play nice because of the lowrider cartridge.

Just replacing, or i believe you can change it to cork?

Felt compacts over time, and wears out. (generally, don't know if that applies to turntables much)
