Overstock.com is awesome!

I never really bought anything from there before because they weren't always the best prices.

But I've been looking for a replacement laptop for some time now and my girlfriend wants a laptop of her own so she doesn't have to keep borrowing others computers. So her B-Day is coming up and I thought I'd go find a refurb for her. She doesn't need anything fancy so a refurb would work out peachy.

Well I was talking to a friend at work and he sent me a link to a laptop on Overstock.com. It's a Lenovo 550. It's about 500 bones on Overstock.com. I was skeptical but then I noticed it was "New" and not "Refurb". Hmmmmm...

I went to Lenovo's site and found the 550. It starts out at about $669 on Lenovo's website. Currently on sale for $449. However, the way is is spec'ed out on Overstock.com, it's sale price would be about $540 with the regular price being $760. I was floored! I jumped on it and bought two. One for me, one for the girlfriend. Granted, a bit more than I wanted to spend but the specs are sweet for the price!

The basics:
15.6" screen (widescreen)
3 GB of DDR3 RAM
250 GB hard drive
DVD burner + or -
2.1 GHz dual core

Best part? Windows 7 Home Premium, no Vista!

Granted, it's an "entry level" laptop and the specs are not top notch but for what either one of us is going to be using it for, it's more than adequate.

Well I got a call from Overstock.com's Loss Prevention department. They were concerned that my transaction might be on a stolen account. So they called me to verify. Now many sites have such policies spelled out but rarely do they actually call and when they do, they are never as pleasant as the nice lady on the phone from Overstock.com. I was quite happy they called and she even verified all of the info about availability, shipping time and my contact info so they could tell me when the items ship. They might not make it in time for my girlfriend's birthday but I'm sure she won't complain when she gets it.

But Overstock.com gets a big fat gold star in my book!

Oh and go check out the laptop deals they have. Some of them are pretty good right now. They even have the 550's left so if you are in the market, it's not a bad deal at all.

Here's the direct link: http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Lenovo-G550-Notebook/4357199/product.html#none

Ummm...since I was commenting on the fact that Overstock.com called to verify info as being awesome, yes, they are still awesome.

What is not awesome is your lack of comprehension of my post where I did actually mention the Lenovo sale. But I'll give you a pass on that and comment on your feeble attempt to call me to the carpet for whatever the "let's hate Jstas" reason du jour is.

If I actually go through the motions on the Lenovo site, the BASE G550 would end up costing me around $530 shipped with taxes because Lenovo has an office in NJ so by NJ rules, they must charge sales and applicable excise taxes. Overstock.com, lacking a corporate presence in NJ, is not required to levy such taxes. Therefore, I paid $499 plus $3 shipping. Considerably less than what Lenovo was going to charge me. Also, the accessories bundled with the Overstock.com unit drive the sale price on Lenovo.com on that BASE G550 to just over $550.

Therefore, I have gotten myself a decent deal given my circumstances. If it's not a good deal to you, piss up a rope. Could I have gotten it cheaper? I dunno. Didn't really research it on imacheapskate.com because $499 plus $3 for shipping trumps Lenovo's $449 plus sales tax (7% in NJ comes out to $31.43) plus $37 shipping. I still save about $20 over Lenovo's sale price and about $240 over the regular price.

Chill dude. I wasn't trying to start chit, but the way you worded it, it sounded like you took the base $450 and configured it and it wound up as being $530. I didn't understand how you got that price because you didn't mention taxes/shipping being the primary difference. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

In a laptop? I doubt it. You'd have 10 seconds of battery life.

Besides, if I'm getting a desktop, I will build my own.

Yeah, I went and looked and while there are Quad core laptops out there, the cheapest I could find on Newegg's site was this HP:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157042

    Price: $1149.99

Yeah, thanks for playing, next time read the post instead of posting a knee-jerk response.

Yep, no quad core. Of course they do have the G550 configured with a faster processor and more ram for the same price you paid:

Nope, sorry, again, $13.72 for shipping and Newegg charges NJ sales tax. Total price from Newegg $549.67. Add the extra battery in and the price is almost $600.

    Thanks for playing.

Who else wants to play? Ya gotta beat $502.94 delivered to my door. Otherwise, just continue being an **** all by yourself and save the effort of trying to get one over on me, ok?

What other purpose is there to post snide statements about how much I could have saved than to try and make me look/feel like an idiot?

Post about a cheaper deal for someone else who does not have to worry so much about taxes and shipping costs adding another $100 on to the price, that's fine. But even after I spelled it out, they still want to post such things directly meant for me, what other motivation could there be?

It's POSSIBLE that they weren't taking into account your tax situation being in NJ because they didn't think about it (you didn't mention that specific aspect of your purchase in your initial post and then not until post #10).

Maybe the deals they post will help someone else in a state that doesn't charge tax too, who knows.

Sometimes a purchase is made and some coin could be saved elsewhere. If it's applicable, great (then cancel the order and purchase from the other source. If it's not, so what.

All I'm saying is not everything that they're posting reads (to me at least) like they're out to make you feel like a piece of **** human being for buying what you did.

    Ugh.

Price breakdown as spec'ed from Overstock.com with bundled items:

    Lenovo.com: $540 + $37.80 + $37.00 shipping = $614.80

    Newegg.com: $499.99 + $13.72 + $34.99 = $548.70

    Overstock.com: $499.99 + $2.95 = $502.94

Even if you want to penny pinch, I still got the best deal. What floored me about it is as configured with the bundle from Lenovo, the regular price is over $740. The current Lenovo price is a sale price. I don't know if the Newegg price is a sale price or not but I still beat it and got two examples or a pretty spiffy computer.

There are your facts, folks. Stop arguing with me and trying to chastise me for responding in kind to posts that I was obviously not the only one to find just a wee bit hostile. I'm sorry I ever even tried to turn anyone on to such a deal.

I still think Overstock.com is awesome. They have customer service that rivals that of Polk Audio or Crutchfield. I'll buy from them again for sure. But I'll also be sure to not tell anyone else about it.
