Our neighbor has a similar Stanley LED product, and it's perfect for emergencies.

For the duration alone in an emergency, they'd be worth it, not to mention that LED is more resistant to damage than regular incandescent if the lamp is dropped (and they're much lighter if you're not carrying around a bunch of D sized batteries inside).

For all around home use I use this Streamlight led flashlight, it has a wide beam, is fairly bright, uses 4AA batteries that seem to last forever, it's tough and waterproof. This is a very dependable light that I've dropped off an 8' ladder, stepped on it, forgot it outside for a month, and it still works perfectly.......

    And yes Flashlights are cool!!!

If you can find a Pelican for $30, they make great products. If you want to bump your budget:

I bought a lot of LED flashlights... I do not particularly care for the Mags because their LED units were not engineered well. After several minutes, the Mag LEDs lose 50% of light output because the LEDs generate a LOT of heat. To prevent burnouts, the Mags have a circuit that reduces the voltage to the LED.

I like Fenix, but most of their lights requires 18650 or CR123 batteries which are not commonplace. Innova is another brand i do not care for, they used to be good but competition had them cut corners. Surefire are good, but expensive for the value.

You can find some Coast LEDs at Home Depot. They are quite good and they use standard batteries.

If you want to see some real nifty lights, look at Elektrolumens. the owner (Wayne) makes custom built lights with a lot of power. Some use regular cells but the high output ones requires specialty batteries... His Firesword light has a 3,000 lumen output, it is a light cannon.

Yup, I received the Streamlight you suggested in post #34 from Amazon about a week ago and love it. Its the perfect indoor flashlight. In the future, when I need a concentrated beam for long-range outdoor use I think I'll go for the Fenix you and others mentioned. That one seems to be a winner as well. One of the things I like about the Streamlight and Fenix model is that each takes AA batts, and I have tons of Sanyo Eneloop low-discharge rechargeables sitting around.

    Thanks for the recommendations everybody.

there are plenty of choices out there. Fenix makes good quality lights. I also have a few Romisen's and they are nice as well (not as good as the fenix but still very good).

I'm guessing you want to stick with regular (non-li-on) batteries.

Here's a few potential single aa options from DX.
If you have never ordered from them before expect delivery to take 2+ weeks as they are shipping from HK.
I personally have the rc-g2 and while it's not as impressive as my li-on powered lights, it's a great value and a good starter light for someone looking for a basic around the house light. It's not super efficent, so it would be goiod if you have rechargeables. But it does throw pretty well.

Curiousity got the best of me so I ordered a Fenix TK45. 760 lumens should be plenty bright for use around the house.

You can't go wrong with a quality MAG light.

About 8 years ago now, I was hiking through where once was a river...lol. Actually, more like a sleuth connected to the river. Anyhow, I found a maglight buried in the mud. Showed my dad and took it home. Cleaned it off, put new batteries in it, it worked!

My dad told a buddy of his about it who has a place along the same sleuth. My dad's friend said it was his! He had been checking a trot line at night and was holding it in his mouth when out of nowhere a fish jumped up the next hook down and scared the crap out of him...he dropped the maglight, quickly dropped the trot line, grabbed his net right beside him, and swooped down to grab it, he felt it hit the bottom ring of the net and it kept going down...he watched it go all the way down....haha. It was about 10' of water back then. 3 years later I found it.

A little battery corrosion and the water/mud had faded the black finish off in a couple spots. I offered the maglight back to my dad's friend, but he said to keep it, he had already bought a new one.

Moral of the story, those lights can certainly handle the elements!

I use a flashlight every day as part of my wotk as a welding inspector. For years I used a mag light but have found that their build quality has slipped dramtically in the last 10 years. Recently I bought an Inova T-4 flashlight and am very impreseed with its build quality and ability to do the job. Here is a link
