Holy Crap, we are in for a big one. Lots of thunder, lots of lightning, very heavy rains and now tornado warnings. Never do I remember such a storm and this is only the second of three.

You probably don't want to come live here then.

Most people hear those sirens and run. We hear them and go outside to mow.

**** was that a ride. I've never seen rain come down like I just did. Our street was a riverbed, over the top of the 8" curbs all the way across the street. It's going to be a rough couple of days.

    Our biggest threat is flooding.
Damn I hope you have your system well protected. The hell with everything else.
The minute I hear anything about thunder or lightning I go in and unplug everything. I don't even trust surge protectors when it comes to that ****.

Why not just run to your box and flip the main breaker? (Real question)

Yeah we get floods here a lot too. Luckily i live on top of the hill. Last time we had 8" of water running down the road i soaked a tennis ball in dishwashing liquid and threw it in....

That was the funniest thing ever.

Tornadoes are a very real threat here in oklahoma (Twister..lol). And yet you can't really do anything about them so we just go on about our business unless you actually see the funnel cloud coming your way.

Because a direct strike can and will jump across the breaker even if there is an open. That is not a joke either. Also, when you unplug your gear, it is best to put all power cords as far away from the outlet as possible.

    Stay safe Ron.

Also consider that the ground rod is pounded into the ground. A nearby ground strike will take out anything still plugged in.

we throw the BBQ grill in the garage, open the door and await the thrill. Nothing like eating meat off a flame while watching a storm system rip havoc. You know you're a midwesterner if you've seen more tornados than hid from.

    Hi Ron,
    ]
Pretty light on the forum of late. Didn't know we were both in surf city.

Roy, can I still take you up on that 6 string lesson?

I was driving on the 405 north bound when all let loose. It was actually safer in the #1 and #2 lanes as most everyone engaged hard breaking and moving right.

Never knew those wipers could move so fast!!! Now I see blue sky???

    Stand by for more

Seen quite a few twisters in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, Tulsa and believe it or not Columbus Ohio. It's some scary ****. That green eerie sky, glass shatering all over the place and the hail is enough to make you go to church.

I guess it's what you're used to, but I'll take twisters any day to earthquakes or hurricanes.

Drove right across the path of The Big One back in '99(?) 30 minutes prior by accident. We knew that was gonna be bad news. It tore up Moore so bad.

I remember that day very well, or should I say evening. I was heading southbound(west) on I-44 and had to exit SW 59th street and parked under the bridge. I had many family members in the Moore area at that time. The niece and nephews were all inside the Westmoore HS auditorium. I believe the tornado had winds that were recorded as the fastest ever, exceeding 300 mph. Moore was a hot mess.

To the OP, I have never heard of Tornadoes out there. It is recommended to hit the closets or the restrooms in the event of a Tornado. Crazy weather.

According to reports up here (near the Angeles National Forest, and below the Station Fire burn area), some of the debris basins are already full. They spent weeks emptying those after the fires, with a constant line of dozens of dump trucks every day. You'd see the trucks in the morning, before eight o' clock lined up along the street and waiting in nearby parking lots.

The last time the basins filled up, large rocks were washed down the hillside with nowhere to go, so they rolled right out of the basins into the streets (but I don't think our street is at risk in any way: it's not in the line of the usual flow pattern and the steep incline should take any water further down towards downtown L.A.).

OTOH, cars are flipping over all around and every day recently. You can drive with bald tires and spongy shocks for a long time in SoCal and get away with it (there is SMOG testing here, but no DMV required safety inspection that might catch these defects in some other states), not to mention a culture of bad driving in general IMHO, but when the freeways are soaked like they are now, those oversights can have consequences.

I pull the cords on my gear as well when I hear lightning. Apart from the other issues mentioned, going to the service panel would not be fun during a storm since they're frequently outdoors here.

I have never seen one either, and I do not want to. Back in Roseville Mn, when I was a kid, my aunt lost everything to one. She had gone to the store to get noodles for the spagetti she was making and came home to find emergency personnel digging through the rubble of her home about 600 feet from where the foundation was. The kicker was that the stove and the pot of sauce were still in the kitchen completely undisturbed.

Not quite L.A. Ron, we're all the way up to the end of the CA-2, about fifteen miles north of downtown, right in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest. We were only a couple of blocks lower than the Station Fire evacuation zone.

The weather is, well, ... wet! We've had a lot of rain, and more is coming. The weekend is supposed to have sunny spells though. So we're just lighting the fire to keep it cosy, pulling up the comfy chairs, and popping the corks on the bottles ... makes it feel like a second Christmas! I noticed that your pier is one of the only ones that is still open down there ... Crazy surf, but you'd have to be crazy to venture out on it!
