Sony STR-DE945 gets HOT

I have the Sony STR-DE945 and have noticed that it gets pretty dang hot. I understand that at 110 watts per channel its gonna produce some heat but I would consider it to be a little excessive. I recently read some articles where other people have had the same problem and they installed a computer fan on the receiver. Does anyone know anything about this or how it is done? Not only do I not want to risk burning it up but I have also always heard that heat kills power. This is true with cars and pc's but I dont know about HT. I would appreciate any advice or input I can get. Thanx!

I don't know how closed in you have it but your supposed to leave a few inches space for breathing room. It will affect performance but most importantly it greatly shortens the life of your gear and can burn it up if you let it get overheated excessively. I would recommend getting a whisper fan or something similar. Here's a link to another topic on cooling, it has some good info and fan links.

Hey thanks for posting, the link was very helpful with alot of good info. Now I'll just have to decide which route I want to take. By the way... I noticed that I dont see alot of people using Sony receivers on their setups. Is there something I should know? Thanx again!:DAVR: Onkyo TX-SR604/s

IMHO, the basic Sony models suck. However, the Sony ES line is awesome!!! Get rid of that piece and grab a ES.Political Correctness'.........defined

Part of your problem may be 4 ohm load related. A higher currrent amp/ AVR will help.
Basic Sony is just basic. There are a lot of better choices. F1 has a nice ES, and there are a lot of Carver, Rotel and others 'round here that would be a nice step up for you.More later,

Doesn't he own rt series speakers???I thought he did.
I do agree with getting into Sony's ES line fantastic to say the least,if the receiver is getting hot,the first thing I would look at is where you have it installed. As mentioned above, you need good space above the receiver. An open rack is best.If you have a rack with doors and a back on it,I suggest you get your hole saw kit on and start drilling out the back for air flow.Dan

I have a DE-945. I used it in my home theater setup for a while, but the thing got extremely hot (powering rt 600i's and then rt 2000i's). I had the receiver on the top of the rack out in the open and it still got hot to the point where I couldn't put my hand on it. I bought a Denon AVR 4802 and no more problem.
I am planning on using the Sony as a second room system with the Denon's 2nd room out. Haven't tried it yet, but I know the receiver will do the same thing.
After I bought the receiver and saw how hot it would get, I read some reviews on the web and it seems like a common problem with this model. I tried using a muffin fan off a computer, but the fan was noisy and drove me nuts.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
