Penalize an entire car marque for history for some issues 30 years ago. That seems rational.

No more or less rational than 1/2 the responses here.....It's like a race to who gets to say "fix it again tony" first, but somehow my experience is different.

Ever eat at a restaurant, get a bad taste in your mouth and never go back, no matter how many people swear it's better, different, new now? That's kind of how I feel about Fiat. There's too many other brands out there.....why bother.

Yea, I work with statistics and all that so I see what you're saying, but we do all have a human element (bias, halo effect, etc).....or at least I used to think I did.

And I don't see anything in that car I couldn't get out of a nice Honda or Toyota, which I feel much more comfortable betting on lasting a nice long time.

^I can definitely understand that. But it's that same reason that makes me lust for a Fiat, because the old ones i've driven were so much fun. :D

I am more fair in giving 2nd and 3rd chances especially after 20-30 years. But I understand about your biases, we all have them. It's just been a long time and the company isn't even the same as it was.

I would not buy a Fiat and for that matter I will do my best not to ever buy another foreign car. Yeah yeah I don't care where they are assembled I will buy an American made car from now on.

I was giving a lot of thought about buying those Volent monitors but not nearly as interested since they are Hong Kong speakers!

We all need to start doing more for our country and far less for all the others.

I agree with you, but the Fiat merger is a part of keeping Chrysler around, so buying Fiat would help our country. ;)

    A question and a comment:

    Q: is there a 4-door equivalent to the 500?
C: in an earlier post, someone said something about going to Russia to pick up a Trabant; doesn't that seem like it would've been an odd place to go to get an East German car? ;-)

    To answer your "question", no.

To rebut your "comment", you are obviously someone who has never been to Russia. Just because it was as East German car does not mean that they aren't prevalent in Russia and other communist bloc countries. Maybe you should read the actual post before you make comments? I never said it was made in Russia. I just said you could go to Russia and get one. Now you can take your "winky face" and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Danny Glover says that the reason the earthquake hit Haiti is because the Earth is mad at us because the global climate change conference failed.

I guess the fact that the entire country of Haiti is built on volcanic rubble doesn't have anything to do with it because Danny Glover said so.

Thanks, I missed that tidbit of idiocy from Glover.

How so? WHY would I volunteer MORE of my paycheck to supplement the CORRUPT UAW?

It's like those schmucks who give half their weekly earnings to the state lottery commision. Just seems redundant:rolleyes:

My first car: 1976 Fiat 128- 2 door, no radio, no AC, 4 speed

    $3158 out the door!

I learned to change that clutch cable myself:)
I remember having a stereo installed and could not buy a cassette deck with radio preset buttons included...ah an Audiovox cd player with Jensen 6x9 coaxials in the rear.

Buying american really has no meaning anymore, since we friggin' don't make anything anymore. Most american cars have foreign parts, so what some are advocating here is that it's ok to buy the parts, just not the whole of those parts. Sounds logical.

As far as Fiat goes, they never made a dependable product and have given me no reason to think otherwise today. So NO, would not buy one.

I'll stick with a Honda or Nissan assembled in the US by US workers, but the American auto CEOs have done it to themselves, so no, I wouldn't buy a Fiat.

I think it looks spectacular! But that's beside the point. FIAT has a reputation in this country and it is about as deserved as it can get. Fix It Again, Tony! plays to a stereotype but the stereotype is true. They were regarded as junk, albeit pretty junk!

Same kinda goes for Alfa Romeo. Pretty but also pretty crappy.

    +1
I would look forward to an Alfa Romeo convertible but I would wait a few years to read the reliability reports.

Iv'e worked industrial maint for well over 25 years. We produce sound deadening material mostly for FORD. Most of the machines are Itallian made and are un-reliable as hell , the cheapest parts to make it operate ( if it feels like it ). The other machines are Tiawanees and have a better reliabilty record. If the cars aren't built any better than the industrial machines , the answer is a BIG HELL NO!

I really don't understand all the "i'll buy this because of where it's manufactured" stuff.

I buy cars that i like, regardless of brand. If the other brands can't come up with anything to catch my eye, too bad on them. I've historically bought a lot of Toyotas. There isn't one single car they have in their current line up that i would even bother test driving. (May change when the FT-86 hits). I've bought a lot of Hondas. Same story. Nothing interests me in their current line up. Nissan? Same.

The only companies that have anything interesting to me right now are BMW, Audi, Fiat (if it comes here), Chevy (unless the Cobalt SS goes away), and Saturn (now gone, so doesn't even matter).

I don't care where it comes from, i'm not going to "settle" just so i can feel like i did the right thing. It's my huge investment, i'll buy what i like.

Having owned a Fiat 600 (with a massive 32 HP engine) and a Fiat 124 (fun to drive) I would probably wait a few years to see how the quality was before I bought. The timing belt on my last Fiat slipped and the valves got out of sync with the pistons. For some reason, it stopped running.
