TMZ is reporting that Jay Leno has signed a new contract taking over "The Tonight Show" from Conan O'Brien. If it's true, it will be interesting to watch what Conan will say or do on tonight's show. By the way, Jimmy Kimmel will be Jay's guest on his 10PM show tonight.

Conan's ratings suck. Conan sucks. It's business. He needs to quit being a crybaby.

What have you been watching? He's been nothing but a giant ****. So much so I doubt another network will touch him.
I hope Zucker ices his **** for 3 years like he threatened. -
Conan is an acquired taste...and from what I can tell its also somewhat generational...he appeals to a 'younger' demographic.
This could be an interesting opporrtunity if he plays his cards like Letterman did when he left NBC?

No, by **** I mean crybaby. His funny days are behind him on the Simpsons.
Whether you or I think he's funny or not doesn't matter because he has no ratings. I'm not defended Zucker either. Zucker is an idiot for switching this all up in the first place thinking a 3rd rate hack like Conan could handle the Tonight Show. -

I think Conan has handled himself quite admirably, considering how he and his entire staff moved from one end of the country to the other. They uprooted their families, bought houses and cars (which weren't a necessity in their previous location) under the auspices of a set contract term, and now Zucker is **** around with a 60-year established time slot to cater to the guy who shouldn't have gotten The Tonight Show in the first place. They're trying to fix how much they screwed up their prime time schedule by **** up their late night schedule.
Conan's "People Of Earth" letter was spot on about the mishandling of the situation, as well as being gracious and funny. Jay Leno's poor lead-in to the news is what wrecked the ratings for everything after it, and Conan allowing the shift in The Tonight Show's time slot would not only screw him, it would screw Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly as well (not that anyone gives a damn about Carson Daly, but hey... they've got contracts to do their shows too).
Not that it matters, because Conan is a brilliant writer and will go on to better things the way the past victims of Leno have. But if Leno was half a man, he would bow out gracefully and let NBC rearrange their prime time schedule so that people will stick around through the news so that The Tonight Show would at least have a chance.Equipment list:

I am 42, so I am at an age where I can appreciate both Conan and Jay. In fact, I like each of their shows better before the big switcheroo. I also remember Jay when he guested on Letterman's "Late Night" show and he was much edgier. Of course, Jay had to water down his act as the host of "The Tonight Show" to appeal to the widest possible audience....which is something Conan has yet to realize. I suppose Conan no longer having the masturbating bear was a concession to become "mainstream" but there are times when I'd watch Conan's version of "The Tonight Show" and have no idea who any of his guests are.
Also, I think people need to see things from NBC's perspective. Whatever NBC has done may be a huge mistake, but what's NBC going to do now? Whether Jay's 10PM show was successful or not, Conan's show still suffered a big ratings drop when compared to Leno's version of "The Tonight Show"....to the point where Letterman is now #1 in the ratings. If you're NBC, would you stick with Conan, whose ratings may go down again after this mess blows over, or go back to Jay, someone who has kept "The Tonight Show" #1 for at least a decade. Reportedly, if Conan is to depart from NBC, he will be paid $20 million/year for the next 4 years on his contract. At the same time, Leno's version of "The Tonight Show" took in about $120 million/year in ad revenue. You can do the math and see that going back to Leno will be a safer bet than sticking with Conan. -

If Conan's show was so good then it would attract the needed audience, especially when any TV show is just a press of the remote button away. The ratings for Conan's show has been declining since the premier, so you really can't blame Jay for Conan not able to hold on to his audience. -
I don't disagree at all, in fact, I predicted that this is EXACTLY what was going to happen when I first heard about the switch..it seemed lame brained to me..and they pay these guys BIG BUCKS to come up with idiocy like this???
One can only wonder..! Of course, economically it makes sense to bring Jay back but in a way he's been a pawn of NBC in the process as well?
This reminds me of how our gov't works a bit!

From the New York Times....Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports, said the reason for Mr. Leno’s return to NBC’s late-night roster after a short stint in prime time this season was a simple one: disappointing ratings for Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show.”
Referring to the pointed jokes made this week by Mr. O’Brien and David Letterman of CBS, Mr. Ebersol said it was “chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn’t beat in the ratings.”
He added that “what this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan.” -
I never liked Conan, but prefer it to Jay's new garbage."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Interesting that you seem to be blaming NBC (and Leno) for this when it's Conan who didn't bring in the ratings to keep him and all of those poor people who were uprooted employed.
Seems to me they ought to have worked a little harder if they wanted this to work out. It was Conan's hour, nobody else. -
Neilsen ratings are all about the lead-in, especially with the local news in the mix. It greatly affects the ratings, because historically, a vast majority of people tend to leave it on the channel they most watch during prime time. Letterman's ratings are bolstered by the fact that CBS has a very strong prime time lineup, whereas NBC doesn't anymore. The problem isn't solely one of a particular show not pulling in the ratings, because the ratings are so heavily skewed by the lead-in. So yes, NBC is the one to blame. By giving their late night shows such a poor prime time lead-in, they basically threw them under the bus. This isn't a new problem either - local news programs for NBC have declined in ratings because of this same phenomenon.
It's a failing on the part of NBC, which is why NBC's own shows have been making self-referential fun of their managerial staff for years now, even before Conan took over The Tonight Show.Equipment list:

Jesus Dave, we get it, you don't like Conan.
Getting poor ratings (and t hey're certainly not as bad as your and NBC's hyperbole would lead most people to believe) is par for the course for new late night shows. Jay Leno, when first adopting the Tonight Show, had poor ratings to start out (and this was 15 years ago when it was a lot easier to get good ratings due to a much smaller channel pool) but NBC gave him time to build an audience, they didn't yank him off the air 7 months in and put Carson back.
It's funny how passionate people get about people getting paid 40 million dollars keeping their jobs.

Conan on the late late slot or whatever he had was the the ONLY late night show i would watch. He had me ROLLING at least every other show. Great stuff.
I could never really get into Jay, though. Nice guy, down to earth, would love to meet him, just not my thing.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

NBC wouldn't be getting rid of Conan (they actually gave him an option up front) if he was bringing in the kind of revenue they need. The kind of revenue they obviously feel Leno can bring in with his old time slot and couldn't bring in at his current time slot. Who is the idiot at NBC who thought this was ever going to work? Zucker?
Shows come and go all of the time. The only reason I am commenting on this is because Conan is acting like he's some innocent victim. His legion of adoring fans are belching the same spew. Bottom line is he wasn't bringing his A game or his A game isn't that good. Not saying this isn't hard on him and his staff. I could garner a little more sympathy if he wasn't being such a **** about it.
I don't watch Jay Leno. I don't care much for NBC. I don't watch Conan O'Brien.
Just don't like constantly hearing about a guy acting like a victim when he's anything but. -
Yes, he totally should have done what Leno did; dumbed his show down to pander to the dullards in the middle of the country so he could get the ratings.
Late night shows notoriously take time to build an audience. NBC told Conan they wanted to give him that time, and didn't. You dont have to feel BAD for him - I certainly don't, he's a millionaire who tells jokes for a living - but Conan and everyone else on NBC IS a victim of the management's incompetence and short-sightedness.
Look at Kimmel on ABC as an example; his ratings were ABYSMAL when he started on ABC in 2003 and didn't pick up for YEARS, but ABC kept him on because they knew his audience would come, and it has. He still doesn't get the ratings Leno or Letterman get, but he's a solid franchise for them. NBC is going to yank Conan, put Leno back on the air, he'll never get the ratings he used to get, and NBC has permanently made themselves a laughing stock. Awesome plan.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Dullards in the middle of the country? Nice... Yeah, the humor from Conan is real high minded stuff. If we idiots in middle America weren't so stupid we'd get the genius that is Conan.
To the bolded and highlighted portion, I would agree there's some logic there if Conan was a new product, but he's not...he's been around a long time on the same network only an hour later.
It all boils down to money. If NBC is making a mistake, let them make it. If Conan is a great draw for a network someone else will pick him up and capitalize on NBC's loss. -

It's not highbrow or intelligent, it's just more edgy and not watered down like Leno. Nearly everyone involved in television knows it. The ratings back it up. Even Dick Ebersol, an NBC executive, said the same damn thing when he spoke out against Conan yesterday - NBC told him to do what Leno did, and modify his act to appeal to a broader audience (read : Middle America) and he didn't want to compromise his comedy. Meanwhile Leno at least used to be mildly edgy but didn't think twice about being as bland as possible and doing lame bits like "Headlines" every other night. To the bolded and highlighted portion, I would agree there's some logic there if Conan was a new product, but he's not...he's been around a long time on the same network only an hour later.
This whole fiasco is about what a difference that hour apparently makes to the viewers, so I think it's still relevant. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Seriously... is there anyone on this planet who has ever truly laughed at one of Leno's "jokes"? I mean straight from the belly. Full-body spasms. True obnoxious laughter. The kind that cures cancer and ****.

Nope. On the other hand, Conan makes me pee myself. That may mean i'm a part of middle America. That's fine, i'm still entertained.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Perhaps you used the wrong word, but you called many in middle America dullards. A dullard is a stupid person. Applied in the context of this discussion, Conan's brand of humor is a little above our level of thinking. If that's not what you meant, OK, but that is what you said.
I think you're misreading Ebersol's comments. When I read "appeal to a broader audience," I don't think middle America. I think age demographics. Theres no doubt Conan appeals to a younger demographic.
Neither Leno or Conan have been edgy...they can't be. It's network TV. The edgy stuff is on dish or cable if it's anywhere.bobman1235 wrote: »This whole fiasco is about what a difference that hour apparently makes to the viewers, so I think it's still relevant.
Sure, and boil that down further it's about money. NBC created a mess and neither guy could deliver in their new timeslot. NBC tried to undo the mess and Conan doesn't like it.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think Conan would ever be able to hack it in his current time slot and you think he just needed more time. Right? -
I wonder if Comcast's deal to purchase NBC / Universal has anything to do with the decision to get rid of Conan this soon.
I expected a dip in the ratings for Conan when he took over and don't see the ratings go back to previous level, if ever, for at least a year or so. The sad part of this whole mess, for me at least, is that I enjoy Conan's show more and more. It seems he has finally settled into a "groove", especially in the last month or two. Jay's 10PM show is truly horrible....and I am a fan of Jay's as well. The fact that Jay would be available makes NBC's decision to get rid of Conan that much easier to make. -
Leno's being an a$$hole and Conan's being a baby. I still like Conan better.SDA-1C (full mods)
