So - I'm new to Ubuntu and installed it on my DIY PC over Windows XP.

What antivirus software should I install before I start browsing the web?

And how come I cannot install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu?

One of the benefits of using Ubuntu is not worrying about an antivirus. You can use openoffice, Microsoft does not want/allow Office to work on ubuntu/linux.

How then would I open .docx files that people send me?

When I save in OpenOffice I can choose from .odf or .doc but what about opening files?

OpenOffice will usually translate MS Office quite successfully, so it shouldn't be an issue. I haven't used it for a while, but others may have experiences to share with you.

.docx is for Office 2007 and newer. Even office 2003 doesn't open those unless you get a converter for it. I would make sure it's newest version of OpenOffice, or search the ubuntu forums I'm sure they'll have some info on it.

Interoperability between OpenOffice and at least earlier versions (though at least '03) of **** is pretty good.

Yes, I can read a .doc (Office 2003) file perfectly, but when someone sends me an Office 2007 file in .docx file format I cannot open it properly.

Anything with graphs/charts/complex formatting looks strange in OpenOffice. Not sure if it's a user issue, or something I need to tweak in OpenOffice.

Make sure you have at least OpenOffice 3.0 or newer. If it isn't installed by default by your distros repository, you will need to use an alternative repository. Which version of Ubuntu you have? 9.10?

Some links you might find useful:

    http://www.oooninja.com/2008/12/better-office-docx-converter.html
    http://www.oooninja.com/2008/01/convert-openxml-docx-etc-in-linux-using.html

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-1-on-Ubuntu-9-04-111105.shtml

Like said earlier, no antivirus is needed, just make sure your firewall is setup. If you feel the need to have AV, install ClamAV. It should be available in the software installation menu.

    Sami,

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and Knoppix 3.0 (these were CDs someone gave me). Both come with older versions of Openoffice. I think I need to install OpenOffice 3.0 on the Ubuntu in order to get this to work.

And it will run Office fully with no compatibility issues?

It should, I've run it successfully. I run Ubuntu on my main machine now and keep a virtual machine of Windows for things I don't have time to play with. Using a software like VMWare Workstation's Unity makes it pretty seamless.

I love Ubuntu/Linux as well. MS programs will not work on Ubuntu (for the most part without wine or something to that effect as mentioned) I have the same problem with my Zune software, that is the only reason I still run Windows on a seperate partition and dual boot.

Are you using the LiveCD or have you installed Ubuntu? If you have installed, you can do a distro upgrade. Unless there is a specific reason why you're staying with 8.04, I would recommend the upgrade.

Both. Knoppix as a LiveCD (run off the CD-ROM drive), and Ubuntu installed on the hard disk.

Keep in mind that the compatibility between Microsoft Office and Open Office is one-way, there are issues going back to MS Office.
Iow, you can open and modify Office 2003 documents in Open Office, but don't expect to be able to then use MS Office on them or docs created in Open Office under linux.

That's the issue I am having. Complex formatting looks funny/skewed when you open and modify Office 2003 documents in OpenOffice, and even more strange when you use MS Office to read an OpenOffice document.

I take it then you must install Microsoft Office in order to keep the formatting of documents intact? I hate having to re-edit documents because conversion from Office 2007 to OpenOffice to Office 2003 messes up the formatting.

How do I take care of this?

Get a freeware VMware server for linux, or use Wine and run XP and Office 2007 through that. It's a PITA, but it's the nature of the beast.

Google docs online might do it also, which would totally solve it for you.... I can't recall if the formatting stays good. It probably is a OpenOffice free version also, so probably will not help.
I was messing with a doc for my daughter in it some months back.

Upgrade your OO to 3.0 and you will get docx support.

Yes, I did that. Compatibility is possible but the converted files are far from perfect. Graphs, tables, and charts sometimes get messed up.

For the OP's sake, NO it will not install under linux.

But you go ahead and try since you thought of it.

I was just thinking I have a copy of ubuntu but never really used it that much. Just trying to think outside the box. I will ask my teacher tomorrow about other programs he can use. Considering the class is on linux install and operations.

It's too bad you have to have 2007 compatibility, because I just tried it using Google docs, and it saves in Word 2003 format with no apparent problem.

Which would be way sweeter if someone got on Google's **** to give it 2007 compatibility also. Another cool thing is they will save as a pdf. Just can't go back to Word 2007 and work on them. :(

Better option would be to install VirtualBox and boot that up whenever you need Office. Another option is to use ODF instead of DOC/DOCX but I don't know if that works any better.
